| sdiebels's Full Review: Coleman 10' X 10' Sundome Tent 9160K101 |
I recently purchased a Redwood, which seemingly is a Sundome 12x10 tent. I currently own another tent, a Eureka Apex 3. I was concerned that a lower level tent (or so I thought) would not perform that well. I couldn't have been more off the mark--seriously.
I set it up the first weekend and seem sealed the tent- outside and inside. I did not seal the fly as it is factory taped.
Well my son and I decided to backyard tent one night to check out the tent. Here are the details:
- It's spacious, with a room divider. There is enough room on one side for a full-size air mattress plus a whole other side for the young'ins. You could get 4-5 adults in this thing pretty easily with mats, but this is my comfort tent not a backpacking tent.
- The ring and pin plus sleeved pole is as easy as it gets for one person setup (my son is almost 4, so not so much help there). Dome styles are easier to erect and I think their designs are so tested it makes quality manufacturing easier-IMHO. That means you'll spend less time fooling with the setup. You can put this up in 5 minutes with two people, 10 minutes with a single person.
- I cannot comment on the ventilation system, but it is seemingly comparable to other tents, like Eureka products, but it wasn't a factor on this night.
- The tent floor is solid, but heavy. The tent is comparable in weight with any tent this size.
So we slept fine and it was a fair evening. The next morning, it started to rain. It was in the backyard, so I left it up since I thought the rain would pass and I didn't want to get the interior wet when removing the fly, etc when putting it away.
Much to my chagrin, the rain didn't end for almost 24-hours and after about 1.5 inches of rain with wind, I went out to check the damage. I was certain I'd get a puddle or two in the tent. The floor is basically a poly tarp,no ground cloth, it's tub style and up a few inches on each side. I knew that was better than most floors but expected some water. There was nothing, not one drop of water in the tent. I was amazed, simply astounded. That's a lot of water for any tent to take in a 24-hour period.
This tent makes me a believer in Coleman products- it really does. I have always been skeptical of their tent quality, but no longer.
I know it'll take a few family camping trips to see what the wear and tear look like, but it seems like a quality tent. I paid $70 for this tent on sale, good value.
My two feedback points are that the zippers aren't as good as my Eureka, and it won't return to its original packaging without the second coming of JC himself, but that's it so far.
