A Great Camping Lantern!

Written: Dec 19 '04 (Updated Dec 19 '04)
Pros:A very reliable lantern.
Cons:They have not developed a better mantle.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend these lanterns to any one who spends much time in the great outdoors.

Coleman ® 2-Mantle Adjustable Gas Lantern

I have been relying on Coleman ® products for about the last twenty five years. This particular lantern was the main source of light at our ranch when I was a boy. Mom would always have one or two kerosene lamps burning in the living room and a Coleman ® 2-Mantle Adjustable Gas Lantern burning in the kitchen. Dad would fill up the lanterns and lamps about every three days. The Coleman ® 2-Mantle Adjustable Gas Lantern will burn roughly eight or nine hours with a full tank of white gas on the medium light setting. I like the lanterns for several reasons. The lantern is very reliable. I have ran some of these lanterns for years with out a single problem. If you do experience a problem with the Coleman ® 2-Mantle Adjustable Gas Lantern, it will most likely be a dried up gasket in the pump assembly. The parts are inexpensive, readily available and easily fixed.

Conclusion

This particular model is the old faithful of Coleman lanterns. The first models were the old red top Coleman lanterns and they changed camping and the outdoors forever. Then in the 1970‘s this model was introduced. The good old green Coleman ® 2-Mantle Adjustable Gas Lantern. Although Coleman has made newer and fancier models of their lanterns, this model is still very popular and it remains a top seller. I have a couple of the lanterns that my parents used at our ranch in the 1970‘s and I still use them on a regular basis. I have used my two Coleman ® 2-Mantle Adjustable Gas Lanterns for twenty five years and would not trade them for anything. They are built well and their design is simple. There just are not many parts to break down so they don‘t.

There are also a couple of things that are not so good. The most common bummer about these lanterns are the mantles. Sometimes the mantles will break and fall off. This is not a big deal as much as it is an inconvenience. If the lantern is hot, you have to wait until the top and globe cool off before changing the mantles. After you get the broken ash mantle off, just tie on a new one. After you get the new mantle tied on, take a lighter and burn the mantle. Place the globe and top back on and you‘re good to hook! The second issue that you will have with these lamps are the glass globes breaking on occasion. If you spend much time camping, I would advise bring an extra globe. Every once in awhile the glass will break. Not from the heat, they break from getting dropped and banged around. You have to be very careful with kids around, the lanterns get very hot! You should also make sure that the carrying handle remains down while the lantern is burning. If you do not, someone will always come over and grab it and it gets very hot.

I keep a couple of these models around all the time. I use them for camping, fishing and hunting. I also like the Coleman 2 Mantle Dual Fuel™ Powerhouse® Lantern. These lanterns are great for camping! If you are looking for a lantern to backpack or climb with, you would not want to use this lantern. They are to heavy, bulky and fragile for that. I have had good luck with my Coleman lanterns as well as other Coleman products. Always bring extra mantles. I give this reliable Coleman lantern four of five stars.
