Coleman 2 Mantle Dual Fuel Powerhouse® Lantern
I have been using Coleman lanterns for the last thirty years. Some of my earliest memories are camping with my grandpa, where he always had his Coleman lanterns going. He used a large two mantle, red Coleman lantern from the 1960s. He also had several of the new green lanterns of the 1970s. When ever we went hunting or fishing we had several Coleman lanterns. From the age of eight to fifteen, I grew up on a working ranch which had no electricity. We had an old diesel generator that we would start once a week to do laundry. We lived by the lights of kerosene lamps and Coleman lanterns.
All of those years using the Coleman lanterns, we very rarely had any problems with them. Once every couple of weeks mom would wash the glass globes and change the mantles. You have to keep in mind that we used these every night. When a lantern did quit working, the replacement parts were easy to get. As I recall my Dad would have to replace a lantern generator and hand pump gaskets once in a while. The replacement parts are easy to find and inexpensive. If you had to replace a generator for this Coleman 2 Mantle Dual Fuel Powerhouse® Lantern, it would cost you just, $12.00. For as much as we used the Coleman lanterns, they were just fantastic.
I hunt, fish and prospect for gold, so I spend quite a bit of time in the outdoors. I have every model of Coleman lanterns from 1966 to the present. The Coleman 2 Mantle Dual Fuel Powerhouse® Lantern was the latest addition to my outdoors gear. This lanterns claim to fame is its brightness. It puts out 25% more light than its predecessor. The lantern does put out a lot of light. It lights up a 14 foot camping trailer with ease at ¾ of the way on.
Another feature that I really like about the Coleman 2 Mantle Dual Fuel Powerhouse® Lantern is the fact that itll run on white gas or unleaded fuel. I still burn the White gas as it is safer and burns cleaner. If I ever get in a pinch I can use unleaded gasoline. I have ran out of white gas on occasion, its nice having this option! Like any other Coleman lantern, its very durable and dependable. The only problem that I have had over the years is with the pump cups / gasket. After the lantern sits around for a year or two the pump cup will dry out. If this happens you can not pump air into the tank. Try to keep the pump, plunger and gasket good and lubricated. If the gasket does dry out, just pop the small pump clip off and take the gasket out. Apply some oil or lubricant to the gasket and put it back together. Its an easy fix.
25% brighter than previous models
Powered by two pints of Coleman® Fuel, white gas or unleaded gas
Seven hours burn time on high, 14 hours on low
Final Thoughts
I have had nothing but good luck with Coleman lanterns over the years. When I do need a replacement part, they are easy to find and reasonably priced. The lantern is very durable can rattle around a bit as long as its in its case when traveling. Having the extra light that this lantern can put out is also a major plus. Furthermore I have the choice of using white gas or unleaded gas. This is really handy if you ever run out of white gas! I would recommend the Coleman 2 Mantle Dual Fuel Powerhouse® Lantern to anyone who spends a significant amount of time outdoors.
You may also want to consider buying one of these lanterns as a back up light source in the event your power goes out. This would be an excellent addition to your camping gear or emergency gear. Always have some ventilation when using these kinds of lanterns. Dont forget to buy several extra sets of mantles. Youd think that after 100 years, that someone could come up with a more permanent mantle? I give this neat little lantern four of five stars.
