Coleman Extension Broiler: Another inexpensive campfire tool

Written: Jan 26 '06
Pros:Inexpensive, easy to use.
Cons:Not good for small pieces of food,
The Bottom Line: A tool for cooking a good amount of food over an open fire.

This is a basket that is designed to be held over a fire or coals. It holds medium sized foods well. It can be flipped easily so you can cook both sides evenly. The other key feature is the handle extends slightly for greater range or smaller for easy storage.
The reason I like this cooking tool is because it can do a fair amount of food quickly and easily over an open fire. But comfort and ease of use need improvement.

How it works.
It is a clamshell design. You just open it up, put your food in, and close it. It really is that simple. The handle does extend if you need some extra length away from the fire.
You can hold it by hand over the fire but what I like to do is get a big rock and sit the rock on the end of the handle. The middle part of the basket rests on the fire ring. This means that the basket will be at a 45-degree angle above the fire because the fire ring is holding up the middle of the handle. So I can go get a soda or cook other food while the food is the basket is slow cooking. But you can just as easily put this over a fire or just above some hot coals.

What food have I done with it.
Mushrooms- Too small, they had a tendency to fall out.
Teriyaki Chicken strips- As long as they were long enough they would not slip out. Small cuts of chicken slip out of the basket
Chicken Breasts- perfect for this contraption. You have room for about 3 medium sized ones.
Cut up vegetables- have a tendency to fall out.
Halved vegetables- work very well. Sliced onions, squash, tomatoes, carrots, etc work very well.
Shrimp- the have a tendency to fall out unless they are the jumbo variety.
Fish Filets- works well.

Ergonomics and problems I have encountered.
This, like so many other camping tools, is not the easiest thing to use. There is no comfortable handle, just a thin gage metal handle. The expandable handle can also be a little tough to extend and contract.
The main problem I have had is smaller pieces of food have a tendency to slip out. When I was cooking shrimp and mushrooms I did have a couple of pieces go fire diving. If you do use smaller pieces then you need to be very gentle when you flip it.
Another concern is the pieces can sometime stick to the metal. So when you open up the clamshell you need to do so carefully so that the food does not break apart or fall through the wire mesh.

How to clean it.
I just use a scouring pad, soap, and water. It is relatively easy to clean, just don’t expect it to look brand new.

Durability
I would rate this at a 2 out of 5. If you accidentally throw an ice chest on it or step on it with your hiking boot then you will probably have a damaged basket. The metal is a thin gage and can bend fairly easily. So treat this with care and pack it on the top. But the cooking basket is all metal so you do not have any plastic pieces (like a plastic handle) to worry about.
With that said, I have had it for a year and a half and it hasn’t broke on me yet.

Weight and dimensions
Weight: 1lb 7.25 ounces
Length of handle extended: 17.5 inches
Length of handle retracted: 11.5 inches
Length of cage: 8.75 inches
Width of cage: 13.5 inches
Height of cage: about 1 inch

Summary
This is a wire basket that holds food. Once the food is secured in the basket you can flip it so both sides of the food cooks. This tool does not work well with really large pieces of food or small pieces of food. For that you may need to use a cooking fork. But if you have the right sized food and a medium size family then this tool works pretty well when cooking over an open flame.
