Coleman Flocked Quickbed with Quickpump: Tent-Camp With a Little Comfort
Written: May 23 '04 (Updated Dec 30 '07)
Product Rating:
Pros: easy to inflate & deflate, uses standard king-size sheets, keeps me off the ground
Cons: i wake up everytime someone rolls over, slow leak developed in second season of use
The Bottom Line: When one person is a light sleeper, I'd recommend two twin mattresses over a king, but I like the Coleman Flocked Air Mattresses quite a lot.

When we first started camping, the one thing I was adamant about was not sleeping on the ground. I dont sleep well to begin with, so I needed to be as comfortable as I could possibly get. As I searched through sites about camping gear, one name kept coming up, Coleman. When I cam across the Coleman Flocked Quickbed with Quickpump I didnt hesitate to purchase it.
We tested it out in our living room, and opened up the mattress. The top is flocked and made of an almost felt-like material rather than vinyl, so if you choose to sleep with a sheet rather than a sleeping bag, theres no feeling of cold vinyl underneath you. The rest of the mattress is made of vinyl, as is the plug.
The mattress we bought comes with its own Quickpump. This is not attached to the mattress itself, but is a separate piece. The Quickpump takes 4 D-sized batteries to operate and Ive found I get quite a few inflates and deflates out of it. Deflates? you might ask. Well, if youve ever had any sort of inflatable pool toy or raft, you might have just about pulled your hair out trying to get that last bit of air out of it. Not so with the Coleman Flocked Quickbed with Quickpump. One nozzle of the Quickpump is designed to inflate the mattress while a different nozzle is used to deflate it. I have always been able to suck every bit of air put of the mattress, and fold it up easily without air pockets appearing as I fold. The Quickpump feature makes both setting up and tearing down as well as packing very easy.
As far as sleeping comfort, I cant complain too much, but I would not purchase a king-size Coleman Flocked Quickbed with Quickpump again. While it is great to keep me off of the hard ground and enables me to get a comfortable nights sleep, Ive found that when two people sleep on the mattress can be annoying. The main reason is probably that Im a light sleeper to begin with, but every time my husband rolls over, he wakes me up. If I had to do it again, Id buy two single (or twin) sized Coleman Flocked Quickbed with Quickpump since Ive found it to be very comfortable when I can sleep on it alone. My daughters share a double-size of this air mattress and they havent complained to me, so part of the problem might be the fact that I am such a light sleeper.
We own three Coleman Flocked Quickbeds with Quickpump and out of the three, only the king-size one developed a leak. We tried to find the hole but cant. Its a slow leak, so its not enough for me to toss the bed. I can inflate it and every two days I have to re-inflate it. I dont mind as the pump makes it quite easy and I have a feeling the leak developed from the kids jumping on it. The mattress is certified to 600 pounds, and though both my husband and I are fluffy people, we dont approach that threshold.
The Coleman Flocked Quickbed with Quickpump fits onto one end of our 17x9-foot tent with no room to spare. However, with that and the double bed at the other end, and the twin size in a small outcropping, we still have room to stand in the middle of the tent. Comfort does take precedent over roominess in this case! I cant imagine going camping without an air mattress. For hiking, however, it does weigh a bit too much to carry in a backpack comfortably as well as being bulky.
I would also have no qualms about inflating the Coleman Flocked Quickbed with Quickpump to use as a spare bed when company is here. Since the bed is a standard king size, fitted sheets I have can be used to make it and it can act just like a normal bed. Weve used it when friends have stayed with kids, allowing the kids to sleep on the Coleman Flocked Quickbed with Quickpump while the adults took the beds in my sons room, hence not having to worry about any problems with people rolling over and waking up the other person.
The Coleman Flocked Quickbed with Quickpump comes with a one-year warranty against defects in workmanship (the leak developed after this time period). Despite the leak, I recommend it. If youre a light sleeper, Id recommend two twin-size Coleman Flocked Quickbeds over the king size, however.
