Most of us get set in our ways, want our routine, and have our likes and dislikes. After 87 years, Johnny is where he wants to be and doesn't much care for change. When it comes to breakfast, it starts with a hot cup of coffee and his newspaper. Only after that is read and the coffee reheated once does his breakfast appetite kick in.
Last summer we had gone to visit Honey's sister (and Johnny's daughter) and her husband in Eastern Oregon. If you have read her novel, Maya's Gold, you will know the area. We were staying in a motel, but left it early to visit with them on one of their holdings along the Powder River, Johnny had to get up earlier than usual and, since he hadn't yet had his coffee and paper, wasn't hungry as we passed the last place we could get breakfast served to us.
Luckily we had our trusty Roadtrip Grill in the trunk in its nice carrying case. We had thought to pack the Roadtrip Cast Iron Griddle accessory in one of the case pockets. While Johnny sipped the coffee his daughter, the writer, had poured him, we pulled out the Roadtrip, set it up, and replaced one of the grids with the Cast Iron Griddle. It is a half-moon shape and drops easily into where one of the halves of the grill usually fits.
Honey mixed up a batch of blueberry pancake batter and got some sausage links out of the cooler to cook. The griddle heated up quickly as its cast iron spread the heat evenly over its coated surface. With the heat turned down, the batter sizzled as she spooned three medium sized pancakes onto it. the sauasage was starting to waft its smell over to Johnny as he sat at the picnic table overlooking the Powder.
Meanwhile Mary and her husband were cooking bacon and frying eggs, not part of Johnny's routine, but fine for the rest of us. Johnny's pancakes took a flip and shortly they were ready to slip onto a plate along with his sizzling suasage. While he enjoyed at least part of his 87 year routine, Honey tossed some more sauage on the grill half of the Roadtrip and filled the griddle with diced potatoes. It wasn't long until we all had a great breakfast to join Johnny with.
The Roadtrip Cast Iron Griddle is a great addition to our grill. It is porcelain coated and has a slot along the edge to drain off grease. It fits perfectly to replace one of the griddle tops. It's cast iron spreads the heat evenly so Johnny's blueberry pancakes don't burn or have doughy spots. Coleman also has a cast aluminum version of this griddle, but we think the extra weight of the cast iron is worth the difference.
