Pros:Study, durable, well designed, high heat output portable gas stove.

Cons:Need to buy the case to make carrying and travel convenient.

The Bottom Line: The Coleman Road Trip is the perfect replacement for old style camping stoves. Accessories let you travel easily, tailgate, and this is a great emergency stove for power outages.

It would be better and more accurate to call this “grill” a “portable gas stove,” and a great one at that. We bought our Coleman 9949-750 Road Trip Grill LXE after frustration with a similar product made by Thermos, the “Thermos Grill2Go Gas Grill, branded as Thermos and made by Charbroil. The Grill2Go product only lets you use a teflon coated metal flat and ribbed grill to cook on, you can not cook over direct flames, while the Coleman Roadtrip Grill is designed to be a two burner gas stove on top of which you can put a teflon grill. The Grill2Go also heated across a long bar similar to a bar-b-q grill, while the Coleman Road Trip has two burners that are circular and designed like a regular home gas stove. We use the Road Trip as a portable gas stove for tailgating where you can cook just about anything you would cook at home on a gas stove – including the heating power to boil water and cook pasta! The Road Trip also is a great substitute for the classic smaller design Coleman camping stoves that have been around for what seems to be 100 years – those smaller camping stoves don't give off the heat, are harder to clean, and just frustrating to operate compared to the Coleman Road Trip.

We've owned our Road Trip for two years now, and it has performed flawlessly. The push-to-light spark lighter often the first item to fail on a grill, still works perfectly. We usually use disposal propane camping cylinders which give us enough fuel for about 3 short cooking sessions or 1 or 2 long ones. Later, note the accessories we've purchased to make disposable cylinders unnecessary. Heat from the gas burners is indistinguishable from heat from a home stove, so you don't have to worry about insufficient burner power. The stove disassembles quickly without tools, and wipes clean – the paint is very durable, baked on enamel. You can disassemble the stove further if you need to clean the guts if you've had some big spills, but generally that should be unnecessary because the design of the interior below the burners will catch most any minor to moderate spills. That area below the burners is thick steel, and likely a form of stainless steel since there is now signs of rust or tarnish after quite a bit of use.

When we purchased our Road Trip it was available without the table legs, which I thought would be unnecessary. Today, you may only be able to buy this unit with the table included. While tthe stove works great as a table top unit without the table legs from Coleman (they cost about $50 separately), having the table legs is a great convenience when table space is limited.   Of course if you buy it with the legs today, you just lift the stove out of its cradle and can use it without the legs, just place it on a counter top or other table and you are set to go, it is immediately level and has a flat stable bottom.

I also recommend buying Coleman's wheeled travel case (about $50), to protect this beautiful grill from damage, and it's just inconvenient to try and pack it without the case designed by Coleman, and this well built unit, while not overly heavy, is awkward to carry because of its size and shape. I also recommend buying the high pressure gas hose adapter sold by Coleman and other companies for $24.  The hose allows you to use larger propane tanks, and you can buy anything from the typical full size 20 lb tank down to a very easy to travel with 5 lb one – that way, running out of fuel is very unlikely, and you save a lot of money on fuel, plus you're conserving resources by not using disposal cylinders.

One thing that folks rarely think about are power outages, but we have several every year.  This stove is a perfect back up cooking system.  We use it safely indoors, it has almost no risk of tipping over when used on a counter top, the bottom and sides stay cool to the touch, and it is sizeable enough to let you use full sized pots and pans.  If you did nothing else but buy it to have an emergency back up cooking method, it is well worth the cost - and you can avoid eating out when there is a power failure, this will pay for itself with one event!

On price, this unit with table legs sells for $100 - $200, and is well worth it.  We paid $40 without table legs, an on-line sale price that I have never seen again.  So I've listed the cost to me as $100 because that is what my total cost would be with legs from Coleman.
