Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength fights Sensitivity Issues
Written: Feb 08 '12
Pros:Helps lessen sensitivity to hot and cold; Reasonable price
Cons:Whitening ability only average.
The Bottom Line: Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste controls sensitivity and gets teeth clean.
Do your teeth hurt when you eat hot or cold foods and beverages? If they do, then you are already fully aware of the shrill, chilling pain that accompanies such an experience and while it is usually short- lived, it is often annoying and/or painful enough to influence eating and drinking decisions. But life doesn’t have to be this way. There are several different toothpaste products that take care of this problem and one of them is Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste.
Toothpaste Facts and Figures:
Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste is a blue- colored gel toothpaste with a white stripe running through the gel. It is like most other gel- style toothpastes in consistency and it offers the usual minty smell and taste. The mint flavor is milder than most, making it easier to tolerate and better tasting than some of the sharp mint flavored gels and pastes.
Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste works in the same manner as other sensitive tooth care toothpastes. It contains the special ingredient potassium nitrate that helps protect nerves and lessen the pain felt when hot or cold food and drink come in contact with the teeth. Over time, the ingredients help to build a barrier that reduces the instance of pain.
Besides the ingredients that help fight sensitive tooth pain, Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste also contains special whiteners to clean the teeth and make them as white and bright as possible. It is packaged in the standard tube with an attached, flip top cap.
Ingredients:
Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste is made with the Active Ingredients: Potassium Nitrate (5% FDA Required Amount) (Antisensitivity), Sodium Fluoride (0.14% w/v Fluoride Ion) (Anticavity). Inactive Ingredients include Sorbitol, Hydrated Silica, Water, Glycerin, PEG 600, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Flavor, Poloxamer 407, Titanium Dioxide, Xanthan Gum , Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium CMC, Sodium Saccharin, FD&C Blue 1 (CI 42090).
Final Thoughts:
Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste is a good product to use for those who suffer from sensitive teeth. I have a small issue with sensitivity and my problem is cold foods. The food has to be really cold- like ice cream- for me to experience the pain, but it does happen on occasion and it is annoying enough that I now rotate sensitive toothpastes with my usual brands.
As I said, my problem with sensitive teeth is minor compared to the problems some people have, but I still don’t want any barriers against eating and drinking what I like. With a toothpaste like Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste, I get just enough relief to keep the problem under control. Like other, similar toothpastes, this one doesn’t provide instant relief. It works slowly over a period of days. I find that I start to notice a difference after about five days of regular brushing (twice per day) and the real test for me is ice cream, which is something I love and am not above to give up eating. After several days of brushing with this Colgate product, I can stick my teeth directly into frozen ice cream and I barely notice anything. There is still some sensitivity, but it is very insignificant and doesn’t interfere in any way with my decision to eat any type of cold food.
Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste also claims to make a difference in the whiteness of teeth, but here its performance is a little weaker. A glance in the mirror reveals teeth that look good, but no whiter than they would look if other toothpastes were used. This toothpaste product does produce a good amount of foaming action while you brush and I hoped that this would magically translate into whiter teeth, but I really don’t see much difference.
Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste does help reign- in sensitivity, but one must remember that it won’t work immediately and the effects will wear off over time once you stop using it. I use it by alternating with other toothpastes and this seems to work fine for me because my sensitivity issues are not that great anyway. Those with a more severe problem may need to use this product more frequently, perhaps five days per week or more. Once you stop using it, the protection slowly fades so you will need to adjust your usage accordingly.
Overall, I find Colgate Sensitive Maximum Strength Whitening Toothpaste a good product for tooth sensitivity and a good bargain when compared to some of the other toothpastes that are specially manufactured to control the same problem. It isn’t the absolute greatest product at fighting sensitivity, but it is still quite good and it does lessen the problem. A few days after using this product, I am able to eat ice cream and other frozen treats with no problem, so it certainly makes a difference and earns an easy recommendation from me.
