Colgate Simply White Night Clear Whitening Gel Works While You Snooze
Apr 25, 2006
Review by Bryan Carey
Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Easy to apply; No need to dry teeth or rinse
Cons:Results good but not spectacular; Tendency to want to lick the liquid off the teeth
The Bottom Line: This is a good product that produces better results than the regular version, but it isn't as good as other whitening products.
Are you looking for a way to get your teeth white without spending a bundle? Dentists offer whitening services but they often cost close to $1,000 and require scheduling time off from work or school. But there are some far less expensive ways to whiten teeth and they are found right in your favorite grocery or drug store. One of them is Colgate Simply White Night Clear Whitening Gel, a tooth whitening product that works while you sleep.

Basic Facts About This Product:
Colgate Simply White Night Clear Whitening Gel comes in a small, .34 oz (10 ml) bottle that contains the liquid whitener and a small brush on the underside of the cap. The liquid itself is thicker than water but not so thick that it spreads like glue. Its thickness falls somewhere between these two extremes.
To use this clear whitening gel, you begin by brushing your teeth like you normally do before going to bed. Then, with the brush in hand, you dip it into the liquid and apply it to your front teeth. Using a vertical stroke, coat the teeth from the gum line down (or from the gum line up, in the case of bottom teeth). There is nothing more to do. The liquid dries into the teeth very quickly and goes to work as you sleep. Each dip is good for coating about two or three teeth and the liquid has special ingredients to kill germs, so you dont need to worry about sharing the bottle with someone else.
Colgate recommends that you repeat the application process every night for fourteen nights, for optimal results. Depending on the whiteness and condition of your teeth, it may take a little longer or a little shorter to achieve the best results.
Colgate Simply White Night Clear Whitening Gel is made using alcohol, water, urea peroxide, (carbamide peroxide), PEG 2M, glycerin, carbopol, sodium phosphate, and phosphoric acid.

Colgate Simply White Night Whitening Gel is a product from Colgate- one of the most trusted names in oral care- and it is designed to help remove tough stains that build up on teeth over time and turn them various shades of yellow and gray. It works by placing concentrated peroxide directly on the surface of the teeth and, through the use of other chemicals, penetrating the tooth enamel where it soaks in quickly before it has a chance to get washed off.
I have used both the original Colgate Simply White Whitening Gel and this, the nighttime version of the same product. There are only slight differences between the two and most people will not be able to detect them. One difference in the composition is that there is more hydrogen peroxide in Colgate Simply White Night Whitening Gel than in the regular version intended for daytime use. This additional hydrogen peroxide brings greater whitening power to the product and helps improve its performance.
Both the daytime and the nighttime versions of Colgate Simply White are easy to apply. All you do is brush the liquid over your teeth and with the nighttime version, you then go directly to sleep. There is no need to wait for the liquid to be absorbed because it soaks into your tooth enamel almost instantly. There is no need to rinse, either. And the nice thing about Colgate Simply White Night Whitening Gel is that you only need to apply it once per day. With the daytime version, it requires two treatments daily. This also means that the nighttime version will last a little longer.
Even though this product is easy to apply dries quickly, you need to be careful not to lick your teeth immediately after the application of each tooth. I have a tendency to want to lick my teeth the second I spread the liquid. I have to make a conscious effort to fight this natural reflex so that the liquid can soak in. More than once, I have been forced to re- apply because of inadvertently licking the liquid off.
The most important consideration when selecting an over the counter tooth whitening product is how well it whitens the teeth. A short time ago, I reviewed Colgate Simply White Clear Whitening Gel and I reported my disappointment with its performance. But I am happy to report that its cousin product, Colgate Simply White Night Whitening Gel, is a little bit better. I can see a more noticeable difference in the cleanliness and whiteness of my teeth after using this gel. The reason for the difference, I believe, is the increased presence of hydrogen peroxide and the fact that you apply this and then go to sleep, giving it more time to work. With the regular product, it has only a short time to clean the teeth before you go on with your daily routine- a routine that could include eating and drinking immediately and thereby negating some of the effects. But with Colgate Simply White Night Whitening Gel, the liquid is applied, it soaks in, and it then has a full six to ten hours to work, depending on how long you sleep.
Like regular Colgate Simply White Gel and other over the counter tooth whitening products, this product will not work on dentures, bridges, caps, crowns, or any other dental work. If you have artificial dental materials in your mouth and they start to look dingy, you will need to look for some other means to whiten them. And, like regular Colgate Simply White Gel, this product carries a money back guarantee. Before 60 days have passed, if you are dissatisfied with the results, you can send your original receipt and proof of purchase from the bottle back to Colgate, for a full refund.
Colgate Simply White Night Whitening Gel sells for about $14 per bottle. This is a good price for a tooth- whitening product and while I dont feel it produces results as good as those from using Crest Whitestrips, it does perform better than the daytime version and it requires fewer applications.
Colgate Simply White Night Whitening Gel works well, and it is a product worth considering if you want to brighten your smile without spending a fortune at the dentist. If you can resist the temptation to lick the liquid off your teeth, you will find that this product produces some good results for little money and with great convenience.
