| arch_8gl's Full Review: Columbia Flipside Wicked Bowling Ball |
I've started bowling a lot this year due in part to the fact that i'm in a company league. I had spent the money to resurface, fill and drill, and add fingertips and a thumbslug to an old teal rhino pro, spending 60 bucks in the end to do it. I should have just went with my initial reaction to just buy a new ball.
fianlly i've done it. After much research and toiling to find the best deals, I purchased a Columbia Wicked B/R/T (black red teal) which allegedly hooks a little more then the blue and white one that is pictured.
I average about 150's with my teal rhino and the biggest problem with that ball is that it's too light (12 lbs) and it's old (first generation reactive coverstock), so it doesn't react as much as the newer balls of today which will outhook it by tons!
i threw 4 games with it at lunch the other day, first 2 games were around my average, then i threw a 165 and a 212. This ball does ALL the work for you! :) as long as i could hit my mark, the ball was crushing the pins! With this in mind, I have no doubt that as long as i can hit the marks consistently, a lot of 200+ games are in my future :)
If you read other reviews about this ball around the web, they all say that it hooks a lot, for me (since this is my 2nd reactive ball) i don't have a lot to judge it against, but i can tell you that it hooks a ton more then my rhino. i stand right foot on the center dot, aim for the 3rd dot on the right from center and throw with medium speed and medium revs. the ball tracks down the boards and hooks hard at the end :)
the ball is drilled for a little more distance since i throw slower then some. the pin is about 1" above and to the right of my ring finger (around 2 o clock)
I was also worried that 15lbs would be too much of a jump for me (+3lbs) but i can honestly say that it's easier for me to throw this ball then my lighter one for the simple fact that it's drilled properly and the ball sits right in my hand, thus not making me squeeze at all or have to try and hold onto the ball.
The ball is made for medium to light oil conditions which is ok, since that is generally the kind of houses I bowl in.
If you're doubting whether or not to buy this ball, I'm going to have to say that you can't beat it for the money... the 2 guys that own the pro-shop I bought it from even have this ball in their bags! To me that is a huge endorsement when the owners of a proshop that can have any choice of balls on the market choose a wicked :)
==UPDATE==
4/15/03
i bowled the best series of my life last night 218, 164, 216, 194 (and that 194 had 3 open frames from splits!) that's my first 600 series :) and highest avg after 3 games. which, just for reference, is 180 pins above my normal league avg of 420 series. i have no doubt that the ball is to credit for my high scoring. this ball is simply incredible :)
