I've always been the type of guy that waits to buy something then spends a little extra cash to get a product that will last for years. I'm no different when it comes to camping equipment, definitely regarding knives. I've owned Buck, Kershaw, and other good knives in the $50-$75 range however all have either been lost or broken by misuse. Before a multi-day outdoor trip last fall I decided to once again purchase a knife that would do everything I needed and hold an edge for more than two cuts.
What's a My Tighe... something worn with a suit?
The My Tighe is a knife designed by Canadian designer, machinist, engraver, metallurgy expert, and Renaissance Man Brian Tighe. His skillset has allowed the creation of many low-volume, high-quality knives that are not only functional but unique looking and stylish. The Columbia River Knife & Tool version is a production issue copy of Brian's frame-lock folder at a much lower price (most of Brian's knives are $300-$600). With scalloped grip, OutBurst assisted opening, and large thumb-stud for quick blade actuation, this is a user friendly knife that works every time. Several models include the Veff Serrations which are very effective notches in the blade that are shaped somewhat like fish scales. They are angled backwards to grip and hold whatever you're trying to cut, be it rope, string, or material.
The other cool feature on each My Tighe is the OutBurst™ assisted opening mechanism which gives you a legal (in most states, it can be disabled if needed) 2/3 switchblade knive. You need to nudge the blade open and once it's past 30˚ it will snap open with a pop and lock open. Since actual switchblades (push a release and it opens on its own) are illegal, this system allows you to easily get your knife open as quickly as possible and still stay legal.
Using my M/T on the trail and on the job...
I chose the Model 1091K with the Veff Serrations on the inner half of the blade and black Ti-Nitride coating on frame and blade. The all-black look makes it one serious piece of hardware, anyone I've handed it to (folded of course) handles it like it's going to snap open and start snacking on fingers. The open design of the frame and the injection-molded black Zytel® scales look as though they'd be uncomfortable, however once in your hand it fits just right. There's also a small clip included that can be attached to your belt or pocket.
Once opened you have to be careful how you use the My Tighe, it's extremely sharp and slices through most anything with less force than you are used to. I've cut plastic sheeting, heavy cardboard, polymer strapping, nylon rope and cording, marine docking lines, radiator hose, small twigs and branches, and all sorts of food from sausage to peaches. It's kept a sharp edge for 7 months of use even with some abuse from me. The Veff Serrations work AWESOME for all types of rope, twine, and cording. The unique fish-scale design holds round shapes like rope and keeps them from shooting off the end of the blade, simply rock your My Tighe back and forth a little and twang... you're done. A quick warning about sharpening, the straight portion of the blade can be sharpened with a normal stone, however the Veff serrations need to be sharpened with a special rounded stone or you'll ruin them.
The Bottom Line is I'm very happy with the My Tighe, I would buy it again and I have recommended it to friends looking for a work/outdoor knife. Unless I break it by doing something stupid like prying with it, my 1091K will be around for years to come.
