| onegoofywar's Full Review: Columbia Sportswear Mens Icefield Parka |
I purchased my red (crimson) Ice Field parka several years ago. I had seen a person wearing one and immediately thought it was a great looking jacket. That one was blue, which Im not certain is still available. Current other colors available are crimson, dill and iodine. My purchase was entirely based on the looks of this jacket. I get compliments on it all the time.
A Columbia Ice Field Parka can be immediately identified by the unique embroidered Columbia Sportswear TITANIUM on the left sleeve. It looks great and adds a bit of snob appeal, but we dont care about that, do we? You would think Columbia would call this jacket the Titanium parka instead of Ice Field. The reasoning for this is beyond me!
The practical aspects of this jacket are that it is great in windy conditions. Velcro cuffs, an elastic waistband under the coat, and a detachable hood are all nice features. Blowing snow and rain are effectively locked-out. The jacket has a waterproof coating called Omni-Tech. Also the jacket is designed for maximum flexibility- you won't rip the sleeve near the shoulder pull-starting your snowblower. I can see why this jacket would be of interest to a serious outdoor adventurer. Although pricey, the Columbia Ice Field is a bargain compared to Patagonia.
As the jacket is designed to give you extra room for moving around, I usually layer clothing under it as conditions warrant. I didnt purchase the liner because it is made of fleece, which attracts lint, cat hair, etc. Also, I think the average retail price of over $80.00 is too much just for a liner. Many retailers, however, try to sell you both as a set and not allow you to purchase the jacket alone. Shop around. I bought mine from Cabelas (cabelas.com) that does allow you to purchase them separately. I like Cabelas because they have reasonable prices and excellent customer service.
If you like the quality of Columbia, you will not be disappointed in this top-of-the-line jacket
