| paulv's Full Review: Columbia Dot Bowling Balls |
Columbia has been making the Blue Dot for about 20 years. This very hard polyester bowling ball was used by many bowlers during the black days of short oil. We used the Blue Dot for our first ball strike line and then turned right around and used a Blue Dot to shoot spares.
That is the versatility of the Blue Dot by Columbia, with little or no oil this ball will hook and have good carry power. That very same dry lane condition causes issues making spares and the Blue Dot can be drilled to go straight.
Surprising carry for a "plastic" bowling ball. In it's time it carried as well as a lot of the "new" urethane balls on the market. It doesn't compare to the resin and particle cover stocks of the modern game of bowling.
The pancake block sits a the top of a round core and can go into a very free spin keeping this ball spinning very straight for spares but lacks hitting power. It can be rolled end over end creating a little flip very late down the lane and improving pin carry. The best carry comes from rolling this polyester ball with the block at about a 45 degree angle. This give the Blue Dot an arcing hook with better than average hitting power for a "plastic" ball.
Accuracy is at a premium even on the driest of lanes and put this ball away, when the the lane have even medium oil, other than shooting corner pin spares. You can count on this ball to go where you throw it, so no mistake room.
Make good shots and this ball will be reliable. The harder than most polyester shell gives above average hitting power and very good durability. If you just need a ball to say you have one this ball will last you years and will not show wear and tear very quickly. All this make Columbia's Blue Dot a terrific bowling ball for all levels of bowler.
