Pros: Better than expected taste, filling, crunchy, 4 grams of protein.
Cons: 35 grams of carbohydrates!
I remember the first time I ever tried a Combos snack; I had no idea what they were but someone offered me a handful and the look of them was intriguing. Pretzels are a snack staple in this house and over the past year or so Combos of almost every flavor have weaseled their way into the snack cabinet. If you are into NASCAR and attend any of the events you will be overrun with them because MasterFoods [a division of mars] is one of the sponsors. Does that mean they are there giving away from bags? Not all the time but I have been lucky enough to leave various speedways with them.
Combos Snacks Pizzeria Pretzels
These are a little different from the Pepperoni Pizza flavored combos and while the packages may look the same the taste is different. These have a somewhat milder taste to them so that sharp pepperoni flavor isn't as strong as the other version. According to the package it states that they are "oven baked pretzels with a spicy cheese pizza flavored filling". While I will admit they are easier to eat than a slice of pizza, the taste isnt exactly like sucking down a nice greasy slice. The outer shell of the pretzel is crunchy and slightly salty and the inside is a sort but not liquid cheese filling. Yes, I admit it, I try to get my tongue inside it and suck out the cheese but I never manage to get it al out before I bite into the pretzel.
I do like the taste of these a little more than the Pepperoni Pizza variety; it doesnt give me heartburn and I am not burping it up ten minutes later. You can get these in a variety of sizes but the most common for snacking is the 1.8 ounce bag that my gas station prices at $1.09 which is a complete consumer rape. Even the high priced convenience store charges .75 cents for them and I won't pay that much so the gas station will have a long wait to see my $1.09. Oddly enough Save-A-Lot is the place with the cheapest price for the single serve pouches, they sell there for .50 cents a piece. If you want the big price break then head to your local Costco or candy wholesaler and get the 18 count Family pack; the price break reduces them to about .29 cents a package.
How are these from a nutritional standpoint? Well, that all depends on what you are comparing them to. Each 1.8 ounce serving has 230 calories, 8 grams of fat, 35 grams of carbohydrates [only 7 from sugar] and 4 grams of protein. A bulk of the carbohydrates come from the pretzel shell and the protein is from the cheese filling. For me these are nicer than having a large bag around because if I go through the 1.8 ounces I don't feel like opening another bag; if you are on a carbohydrate restrictive diet you can suck the cheese out of them and gnaw the salt off the outside and pitch the pretzel shell. I do let the guinea pigs have these from time to time but I have to be careful how much salt they have and the amount of cheese they consume. They never seem to complain when I toss the pretzel shells in their bowls if I get the craving for 'just the cheese'.
The Bottom Line
While there are tons of other things that are better for you in the way of snacks, these are a nice treat. They aren't greasy and since they are oven baked you wont get that slick oily feeling on your fingers when you eat them. The brood love almost all of the flavors but as luck would have it, Tommy is extremely fond of the pizza themed ones so we are always bickering over the last bag. I really hate getting the 18 count boxes because that means that everyone is going to be attacking it but to me it is a little bit healthier a snack and fried potato chips or something of a chocolate variety. These are great for school lunches, secret snacks hidden in your desk drawer or munching on while watching a movie. The taste is better than I expected and the pretzel crunch is sure to satisfy you when the munchies strike.
As always, thanks for the visit
