| ctsoapfan's Full Review: Comfort Inn Manhattan |
We went to New York for a Broadway show and wanted to stay overnight, but we were on a budget... it's cheaper to just take the train home, but it's more fun to stay! I decided going with a budget chain like Choice Hotels (parent company of Comfort Inn) would be the best bet. After doing a search on their site I noticed this particular hotel had won the Gold Star award, so I took that as a good sign. They even have their own website: http://comfortinnmanhattan.com
Comfort Inn Manhattan (once known as Comfort Inn Murray Hill according to the sign outside) is located on 35th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. It's 1 1/2 blocks from the Empire State Building, 1 block from Macy's, and about 2 1/2 blocks from Madison Square Garden/Penn Station. It is about 8 blocks from Grand Central Terminal, and about 9 blocks from Times Square. We had a 13 block walk to our show, but we planned it that way since we need the exercise!
Although they do offer a free continental breakfast, it doesn't have its own restaurant, but there are plenty of places to eat on this block. There is a bar/restaurant directly next door which will deliver to your room. There are also a few Irish pubs/restaurants across the street, a Korean restaurant across the street, a Subway down the street, and many fast food places and other restaurants within a block or 2.
The lobby is small but tastefully decorated. The desk staff was very friendly. There are 2 elevators, but one was not working during our stay. You can tell that the building is old, and there were some patches of carpet missing in the hallway on our floor. Coffee was available for guests in the lobby.
The room was small, but not tiny. It was your average New York room. We had a nice king-sized bed, a dresser and mirror with a 25-inch TV with cable, a desk and chair, a sofa-bed, windows that opened (although we had no view), and an air conditioner. There was a safe, extra pillows, and an iron and ironing board in the closet. The room also had a high ceiling, but there was evidence of past water damage. The bathroom had a combo tub/shower. The water pressure was AWESOME, but the shower curtain was being held up by a small bar that attached to the ceiling, and it actually broke when I touched it and hung at an angle the rest of our stay, but the curtain was still functional. They provided a shampoo sample and soap. The room also had an ice bucket and plastic cups. We did not notice any noise from staff or other guests during our stay.
The hotel did have baggage check services (free), so after we checked out we left our bags for a few hours so we could roam the city. The only real problem we had on this trip was trying to get a cab back to Grand Central when we left, we ended up walking all the way with our bags.
I have stayed at better hotels in New York, and I have stayed at worse. This place is nothing fancy, but I have no real complaints. The hotel was clean, and we had a pleasant stay.
