Pros:Reasonable Prices, Friendly Service, Good Continental Breakfast
Cons:Can get pricey in peak tourist season
The Bottom Line: Nice motel with good service in a very beautiful part of the country.
When my wife and I travel we tend to stay away from average cookie cutter motels and try to search out unique places to stay. However on this trip, because we where traveling with our niece and during the busy tourist season we made advance reservations for our stay in Red Lodge. After checking the motel selection and availability, we chose to stay at the Comfort Inn.
The motel is located on Highway 212 on the north side of town as you approach Red Lodge from the Billings Area, or is at the far end of town if you are coming from the Beartooth Highway. The motel is a two story affair with a covered entrance by the front door and a hallway down the center of the building to reach the rooms. The large parking lot is on the south side of the building past the office entrance.
Check in was quick and easy as was checking out. Our room was at the far end of the hallway from the lobby on the first floor. The room included two double beds. As you entered the room there was a storage area for luggage on the right side and the bathroom including a full tub to the left. The luggage are had lots of room that was able to fit all the luggage from my wife, niece and myself.
The room also had a large table and chairs against the far wall next to the window. While the window did look out to the parking lot there was also a nice view of the nearby mountains. The room also included the standard row of drawers that included a 25" television set with a large selection of cable channels.
While our room had two double beds, the motel also offers rooms with a single queen bed, or single king bed. Rooms are air conditioned and included data ports on the phones.
The motel includes a nice sized indoor pool and a hot tub near the front of the motel. The motel also offers a continental breakfast which includes a large selection of cereals, donuts, toast, and bagels, plus several kinds of juices and of course coffee and milk. The selection was much better than continental breakfasts at some other motels. There is also a nice sized area to sit and enjoy the breakfast and people watch. The motel was full during the period we stayed there but there was always seats available even though it was busy. In addition the motel also offers afternoon tea.
The staff at the motel was very friendly and did a great job of promoting the local area. The motel is almost across the street from the Visitors Center although the lady working in the office was not very friendly. While there are no stores in the motel, the motel is three or so blocks north of the main downtown area and shopping is available up and down US 212 which is the main street through town. There is several nice small restaurants in the area and a couple of fast food places toward the south side of town. We also enjoyed a horse drawn carriage ride that was being offered during our stay that pick us up right in the front of the motel.
The motel is a perfect base camp for a visit to the Beartooth area. You are at the north end of the very scenic Beartooth Highway, and there is a nice drive along Montana Highway 78 toward Columbus, Montana. The Custer National Forest is also nearby that includes several unique sites. In addition during the winter Red Lodge has a nearby ski resort that offers very good skiing.
Room rates during off-peak times are in the $50.00 range but can go into the high $90.00 range during the busy tourist season in July and August.
While on the outside the Comfort Inn is a cookie cutter motel on the outside it does what is is designed to do: offer a clean comfortable room for the night with very friendly service.
