I despise banks. I know that they are necessary for the functioning of society, the smooth flow of commerce, readily available capital for the building of blah blah blah but I still hate them. I hate the petty manner in which they operate, petty theft from millions of customers in the form of $29 overdraft charges, ATM fees, etc. I hate the way they are never open when you need them. I hate the long snaking line, at the end of which is a robot behind a counter whose sole emotion is surliness. And I especially hate the manner in which the friendly terms that brought you to the bank in the first place are changed overnight, rendering your favorite bank JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHERS in an informal monopoly of unpleasantness.
So far Commerce Bank has not let me down. Commerce Bank, which has branches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, has recently opened branches in New York. Commerce Bank is a lovely bank. They are to banking what your beautiful new charming wonderful boyfriend or girlfriend is to all of those previous losers you dated. You will fall in love with Commerce Bank. When they opened in New York, it was like a checking account owner's dream come true (checking account owners do dream, you know). How shall I love Commerce Bank? Let me count the ways:
1. The are open every day, even on holidays when you really wouldn't mind if they closed. And they stay open late.
2. Checking is free, with no minimum balance, and free checks.
3. Two free money orders and two free bank checks per month.
4. Friendly, courteous service that is obviously the product of good hiring and training.
5. A "Penny Arcade," a machine that exchanges your change for a receipt that can be redeemed for cash, even if you do not hold an account there.
The sole blemish on the otherwise perfect face of Commerce Bank is an online banking website, that, like those of so many other banks, is poorly designed. This is currently being remedied.
Stay golden, Commerce Bank. Don't ever change.
