Like the album title suggests, "Communion" is an act of sharing an intimate fellowship and rapport. Patitucci is sharing this intimacy with his fellow musicians from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, who are richly contributing to this musical collage. Patitucci always favoring musical diversity, has brought a wide range of musical styles together.
John Patitucci is undoubtedly (one of) the "Best Jazz Bassist"(s) of our time, but his style and phenomenal technique have always overshadowed his soul.
In his last album "Imprint", he has already given the signs of an emotional maturation, and "Communion" is a continuation of this improvement; his most subtle work to date with a much warmer, almost cordial sound and mixture of international (Latin, African, Asian, Samba, Caribbean) musics with Jazz from different eras.
The compositions are gentle but effective, performances are almost flawless with outstanding solos by Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Chris Potter and wordless soprano vocals by Luciana Souza.
My Favorites: "Communion" /with Branford Marsalis' soprano,
"Valentine" /with Joe Lovano's soprano, "Isabella",
"Calabria" /with Joe Lovano's tenor, "The Sower"/with Chris Potter's soprano
Especially recommended to virtuoso-bass lovers and all bass players.
