| phillydogaz's Full Review: Hewlett Packard A3000 All-In-One InkJet Printer |
I bought this unit when I upgraded to Windows XP because at the time it was one of the cheaper units that was compatible. It hooks up through a USB interface and was very simple to use. It came with a photo scanning program and ABBYY Fine reader for text recognition. The photo software is not all that great, and I would recommend finding something else. I was actually impressed with how well the text recognition software worked. I have used it to put some copied articles into word documents so that I can e-mail them to my students. That was a pleasant surprise.
The copy mode works well, even with the computer turned off which can be very convenient. You can even change the mode (quality level, color, etc) right from the controls on the printer. That was another nice feature of this unit.
The two areas I have been disappointed in this unit were scanning and printing photos. When I try to scan in photos, if I have it on a high resolution it takes a long time to scan. Even then the photos don't come out as good as I had expected. This could be a result of the software. Also I don't have good photo editing software on my computer right now so that may help as well. This unit really lags in the area of photo printing. I turned the quality all the way up and still was very disappointed. The image was fairly clear, but the color was terrible. It had a very red tint to it. I have only tried to print out a couple photos since, but have been met with similar results.
As I said before, I bought this unit because of its compatibility with Windows XP. Before this unit I had the Lexmark X73, but I had all sorts of compatibility problems when I upgraded. I was more pleased with the Lexmark's scanning and photo printing ability, and it was a cheaper product. The Compaq fits all of my needs. It prints documents fine (although not as fast as the Lexmark) and it does a great job recognizing text, but if your goal is to scan and print out pictures, I would look for a better unit.
