| felixderkater's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Compaq Presario 900US (470037-278)... |
I bought this computer from a friend used. Since I had good luck with Compaqs in the past, I figured it would be well worth the money, but I could not have been more wrong. This machine had more problems than any I have ever owned. That said, I will still be discussing the pros and cons of this system.
The first thing you will notice is the black and silver case design. Some find it attractive. Others find it offensive. I don't think the backing of the display really fits with the interior design, but overall, I would say the design is good.
The display is large and vibrant. Color quality is surprisingly good, and the brightness is more than acceptable.
The audio quality on this machine is absolutely amazing. I have never heard a laptop with a better integrated sound system, as it combines both clarity and powerful volume.
The system is quite speedy, even compared to other systems with like configuration. I am not exactly sure how to account for this fact, though.
Having discussed most of the positives, it is now time to descend into the realm of negative feedback...
My first complaint about this system, at least when it is functioning, is that the fan is ridiculously loud. From time to time I would take this machine to meetings and such, and for a while the computer would operate in relative silence, but after a few minutes the attention of the room would shift to me as the plastic box in front of me began to emit a loud noise. It literally sounds like a vacuum cleaner.
The main problem I have had with this computer is that it goes through motherboard like a Hummer goes through gasoline. The motherboard has needed to be replaced three time, and the hard drive has been replaced twice. The manifestation of this problem would always come in the same form. After a few minutes of operation, if not less, the system would just power down. My assumption at first was that it did so because of heat, but even after leaving the system unplugged for multiple days, attempting to start it might end with a boot into windows or the system freezing before that goal could be reached.
Ultimately, after a number of repairs, I decided to sell the system for parts in order to recover some of my losses.
In light of these facts, I cannot recommend this system. Maybe I received a lemon. Maybe it is only a matter of time before the rest of you experience similar problems.
