I bought my Compaq Presario 906US from Circuit City the day after Christmas. It cost $999.99, and after a $100 dollar rebate it was $900. This laptop is not at all top of the line but was wonderful upgrade for me because it was relatively cheap and much better than my IBM Thinkpad 760XD, which was ancient. The Presario has an AMD Athlon XP 1500 processor, which runs at 1.33 ghz, but performs better because it performs more operations per clock cycle. It has 256mb of DDR266 memory, with one available memory slot for future memory upgrades. For anyone that doesn't know DDR memory is like PC133 that transfers information on both the up and down parts of the clock cycle, thus making it go 2x the speed. It has a 20gb hard drive, which isn't very big compared to the competition, but for most people I think that will be enough. It has an ATI Mobility graphics chip, that is configured to share 16mb of the main system memory, but can be changed through bios to use 32, or 64 mb. It has a DVD/CDRW drive that plays DVDs and burns CDs well. The laptop comes with a built in 56k modem, and an 10/100 Ethernet port. The system isn't exactly designed to be a gaming machine, but every game I own works well on it. This laptop is perfect for me, and if your looking for something that is not the worst and not the best, but works great, go with this laptop.
I haven't used Compaq's Tech Support, so I have no idea how well it is, so I put 5 only because i didn't know, but I am sure they are fine.
