Pros: Great Value, good performance, all the ports you'd ever need
Cons: Silver exterior, too much preinstalled software
The Bottom Line: It's a great notebook for a reasonable price. I'm happy with my purchase and would buy again.

| puckcoach3's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Compaq Presario 900US (470037-278)... |
I actually bought the Presario 910US.
In the past, I've been pretty loyal to HP products. With HP buying Compaq, I felt like buying a Compaq would be a compromise worth taking. The performance/$$ was as good a value as I could find. The keyboard is great, the scroll pointer is easy and accessible and the screen is plenty big and very readable. It has all of the usual connectivity options (USB, eth, modem, S-Video, etc) but it also has a 1394 port. I'm looking forward to getting a digital video camera and hooking it up directly.
The one issue I had was hooking up my Palm Serial Cradle to this notebook. It doesn't have a serial port so I got a Palmconnect USB device that basically acts as a converter from Serial to USB. I downloaded the latest driver from Palm for WinXP but I couldn't get it to work. I had a conflict with the modem on COM4 that I couldn't resolve. I finally gave up and now sync over my network connecting the cradle to my old desktop. It works and I didn't feel like wasting additional time.
The battery life seems a bit mediocre. The 30GB hard drive was plenty big and having the DVD/CDRW combo is a great feature to have on a notebook. My goal was/is to replace my desktop and I'm pretty confident this baby will be able to get the job done.
I bought it refurbished from hpshopping.com. I can't find any difference between a brand new one and this one other than the couple hundred bucks I saved. With shipping I paid less than $800 -- not a bad deal.
