| jagee's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Compaq Presario 900US (470037-278)... |
I originally purchased a Sotec 3120x because it was so small and inexpensive, but it died on me five weeks later, and there wasn't another one to be had by Office Depot. Here's where extended warranties really pay for themselves! Anyway, I reluctantly started looking around for a different product to replace the Sotec. After looking through what they had, I decided that I liked the features and price on the Compaq Presario model 900us better than anything else they had, bit my tongue and decided to live with the extra size and weight. Then an odd thing happened. I liked the keyboard a lot better than the smaller one I had earlier. That was almost enough to make up for the fact it was about 2 pounds heavier and quite a bit bigger. The extra CPU power was nice an having a much better graphics controller was also nice. Factor in the built-in floppy, IR, Firewire, printer port, better expandability and I don't mind the extra couple of pounds now. The 15" display is really big and nice - almost as large as the 17" CRT on the desktop I have at home. No bad LCD elements or anything. The built in speakers are actually quite impressive considering their size. I have not had many occasions where 110v wasn't available, so I haven't put the battery through its paces as of yet. All in all, I'm actually quite impressed, especially with the addition of a cardbus 802.11a/b adapter. Given my former attitude towards Compaq was always, "Never trust a machine that beeps twice to tell you it's healthy," I'd say that Compaq has done well by me. As an aside, it appears that Compaq has dropped the double-beep as an "I'm ok" message in favor of the single beep that everyone else uses. Yeah... I know... pretty small in the grand scheme of things, but I still appreciate it.
