Destination Restoration

Pros:Seals up the Jeep from water and air leaks
Cons:expensive, will need replacing in a few years if you live in an extreme climate
The Bottom Line: Sooner or later, your old classic Jeep or 4WD vehicle will need all new rubber pieces.

Face it, no one wants to drive around cold and/or wet, right?  Well, when you have a poorly sealed vehicle, this will happen all too often.  And very few of us think about sealing up the vehicle until it's too late.

When I purchased my Jeep CJ restoration project, it was located in Palm Springs, California.  Why do I mention this?  It's a desert.  While there's no real issues with rust in a dry climate, the desert can be brutal on any vehicle's parts made of plastic, foam or rubber.  Each and every piece of rubber in the Jeep I purchased was either rotted out or became dust in the wind.  Needless to say, I had to replace every piece of rubber on my twenty-five year old vehicle.  So on to Ebay I searched.  These kits can also be found at JCWhitney.com.

I did some math and realized that buying ALL of the rubber sealers and elements for the Jeep was cheaper in the long run so I bit the proverbial bullet.

The set includes the following:

The cowl.  This piece seals up the area under the windshield - where most of the air or rain water would enter the cabin.  Fold the windshield down and remove the tiny screws and remove the old one.  This is a great time to check for rust - CJs and early YJ Wranglers were notorious for rusting out in these areas.

The tailgate seal.  Believe it or not, unsealed this can leak major air into the Jeep from the rear.  The seal is U-shaped and fits nicely into the tailgate area.

Hard top rear door sealer.  If you use a hard top, this will seal up the rear door and stop it from "howling" at highway speeds - providing your particular Jeep can reach and maintain highway speeds (insert evil smile here)

(2) sets of elements for both hard doors.  These include the glass scrapers, the outer sealers, the inner sealers, the vent window sealers.  Of all the rubber elements, these will wind up being the most important.  Of course, these are not needed if you use the soft door year-round.

Fitment:

I was so happy that all the pieces fit very well and no alteration was needed.  Each piece had the correct placement of the installation tabs as well.

While the entire set might seem expensive, trust me when I tell you that it's ALL worth it - especially on cold night excursions.  If you don't have or use a hard top and the hard doors, this kit would be a bit of overkill.  You'd be better off buying the pieces you'll actually need and they are available individually.  All can easily be found on eBay.  If you should need to buy all the pieces that come in the kit, it will be less expensive than buying all of them individually.
