| dlstewart's Full Review: Conair Sd4b Styler Dryer 1875 Watt Brush |
My mother and I prefer different types of hair dryers, but we both love Conair products. Im still using my Conair Ion Shine (Model 1461) and love it. My mother has owned two Conair 1875 watt hair dryers and has just purchased her third, a Conair 1875 watt Style Hair Dryer (Model SD4BLR). I figure if she loves this hair dryer so much that shes owned three of them ... I should write an Epinion to let people know.
Years of Hair Dryer Use
I asked my mother how long the previous two Conair hair dryers lasted. She says the attachments started falling apart on both hair dryers, which prompted her to purchase new hair dryers when she found good sales. The hair dryer attachments (the two combs) lasted three years before the teeth started to fall out. The brush never gave her trouble. Since the hair dryers were three years old, she preferred to purchase a new hair dryer rather than buying replacement attachments. At that point, she figured it was more cost effective just to purchase a new hair dryer.
What Comes in the Box
* Conair 1875 watt hair dryer
* Nylon Bristle Thermal Brush attachment
* Detangling Comb attachment
* Styling Comb attachment
* Wide Area Concentrator attachment
The Hair Dryer and Attachments
Hair Dryer
My mother finds this hair dryer easy to hold. Its balanced and disperses even air flow through a 3 1/2" x 1 1/4" opening. All the controls are on the inside of the 5" long handle. I asked my mother if she accidentally turned off the hair dryer since the controls are on the handle, but she says she never has a problem since the on/off control is a slide switch rather than a toggle switch. There are two heat/speed settings (high and low) and a Cool Shot button. A hinged filter is also on this hair dryer.
Nylon Bristle Thermal Brush (plastic)
This attachment resembles a nylon brush with widely spaced groupings of nylon bristles. There are four rows of bristles with nine bristles in each row. Like all the attachments, this attachment snaps onto the dryer over the air flow area.
Detangling Comb (plastic)
The tines of this comb attachment are spaced far apart to aid in separating and untangling wet hair. The seventeen tines are thin. I can flex the tines a bit when I press against them. When I normally think of a detangling comb, I picture the type of comb I own that has wide, stiff plastic tines. I dont think this detangling comb would do well with long, thick hair.
Styling Comb (plastic)
The comb tines are very close together on this attachment. The fifty-three tines are thin but very solid. This is a very sturdy comb attachment that reminds me of the small black combs popular in the 1950's.
Wide Area Concentrator (plastic)
This concentrator is designed to snap over the hair dryer so that the air is directed into a more concentrated stream for spot drying.
Our Personal Experience
The Styler Dryer is advertised as being perfect for shorter hair styles on men and women. My mother has short fine hair and finds this dryer does an excellent job of drying and styling her hair. When her hair is wet, she dries it using the high setting. Then part way through drying, she changes to the low heat setting. (My mother has never used the Cool Shot button.) She primarily uses the brush and two combs while styling her hair and finds no use for the concentrator attachment. Since the attachments easily snap on and off the dryer, she swaps between the brush and combs with ease. Her fine hair is chin length and takes about five minutes to dry and style with this hair dryer.
The manufacturer recommends that when the hair is almost dry, use the low setting to prevent over-drying of the hair.
When on vacation together, I borrowed my mothers hair dryer (conserving on luggage space, she elected to bring the hair dryer). My hair is above the shoulders and thicker than my mothers hair. I found it took me around ten minutes to dry my hair. This is not my favorite style of hair dryer. I like the shape of the Conair Ion Shine dryer that I use, and it feels more comfortable in my hand. Perhaps Im just not used to the shape and weight distribution of this hair dryer. My mothers hair dryer felt awkward for me to use but it did a good job of drying my hair.
My mother loves this hair dryer. She likes the way it feels in her hand. When I asked her how it felt for balance, she had no complaints. She finds the sliding switch on the handle easy to use, the attachments simple to snap on and off the dryer, and the hinged filter easy to clean with a small brush (a cleaning brush is not included with the dryer).
Likes
* Enjoys using a hair dryer that has comb attachments
* Controls on the handle are conveniently located
* Hair dryer works well at drying and styling hair
* Low noise
Dislikes
* Wonders how long the attachments will last before breaking
Safety Features
The manufacturer states that blocked or clogged intake valves will cause the hair dryer to overheat. Ideally, the dust and lint can be cleaned from the air intake openings with a small brush, or the manufacturer suggests using the brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner. Neither my mother nor I has ever used a vacuum cleaner to clean a hair dryer.
Should the hair dryer overheat, a built-in automatic safety device will shut the dryer or the heat off to prevent damage or personal injury. If the dryer does automatically turn off, unplug the cord and allow the dryer to cool for 15 minutes. Check the air vents for obstructions/clogging and clean them as mentioned above.
Purchase & Cost
This hair dryer was purchased at a local pharmacy for $17.99 on sale and regularly sells for $19.99.
If any of the attachments are lost, an order form is included in the box. The attachments and their prices as they are printed on the order form are:
Detangling & Styling comb = $3.50 each
Natural & Nylon Bristle Brush = $3.50 each
Wide Area Concentrator = $3.50 each
Summary
My mother is convinced that the Conair 1875 watt Styler Dryer is the best hair dryer she has ever owned. Since this is her third hair dryer of this model, I believe it! She finds this Conair consistently dries her hair well and the attachments allow for easy styling. Since my mother is so enamored of this hair dryer, despite problems with breaking comb attachments, I'm giving this hair dryer an excellent rating. My mother is happy, her hair looks great ... and thats a good thing.
