ARE YOU A TRENDSETTER?
If so, then this is a styling aide you need to own. I had my eye on this product ever since I saw it at a glance while shopping at Wal-Mart. I saved up the money, a modest $25, and purchased it a few days later. I say "modest", because I think it's a good deal for this product. Especially considering that with a head of thick, long wavy hair like mine, it would probably cost more than that every time I visited my hairdresser to get the same thing done.
To be honest, using the product efficiently takes some patience and practice. You have to be sure you start with small sections of hair; bigger sections tend to come loose from the securing hooks. It's also important to hold the braider away from your head, making sure the hair strands are also pulled in a direction away from your head. This creates tighter, more uniform braids.
I have seen two versions of this product. One has two prongs, making a braid of two twists; the one I purchased has three prongs, so you can make a two or three-strand twist. When I say twist, I mean like a DNA strand; that's what the "braids" remind me of. Don't get me wrong, they look really funky and I love them, but traditional braid people; beware! These are not the braids our mothers made us sleep in so our hair would be in princess-like waves the next morning for school pictures. They look more like spirals. I still love it! You'll get a lot of stares and definitely some copycats!
I DID NOT like the beads and elastics that came with the braider. This product must be geared more toward pre-teens and adolescents, as the cheap plastic beads and elastics are gaudy neon colors. If you don't use small strands of hair, there's no point trying to get a bead to snap onto the end of the braid. They also have a habit of just unsnapping and escaping to the carpet, the floor of the car, etc. However, the end result is a cute one! I just wish the beads and elastics came in more neutral colors, like clear, brown or black.
It's also a good idea to start with a wet head, especially with thick or curly/wavy hair. You may also want to run some leave-in conditioner mixed with some gel through your hair before you begin, otherwise you'll have millions of little pieces sticking out everywhere. :)
Anyone with little patience or weak arms (remember, you're going to have to hold your hair straight out, and if you have long hair, your arms will tire fast) should not use this product. Also, anyone who does not like to be stared at in parks, malls, grocery stores, etc should avoid this product. But if you are a trendsetter, or you like to stand out and steal everyone's attention, you may want to try this. :)
