Conair Instant Heat 3/4 Curling Iron - Heats in a Hurry

Pros:Heats up quickly, automatic shut off
Cons:Safety stand sometimes inadvertently folds down
The Bottom Line: Must-have styling tool. The Instant Heat feature is a great time saver. But watch out for the safety stand which can sometimes fold down unexpectedly.
Oh the lengths we gals will go to when it comes to our hair! Sometimes I want little curls, sometimes I want large waves, or maybe today I'd like my hair straight. Bottom line is you can't have too many styling tools.

Fortunately Conair has a vast array of styling tools from which to choose. Recently I was lamenting my lack of a smaller curling iron to create a really curly look. My hair is naturally straight and hard to curl, so I've got to work at it if I want it curly.
I had the Conair 1" iron, and that created nice big, soft curls, but I needed something smaller, so I purchased the Conair 3/4 Instant Heat Curling Iron for about $10 at my local Wal Mart.
I was persuaded to buy this model because of all the cool features, especially the "Instant Heat." And the automatic shut-off feature was important because I have a nasty habit of forgetting to turn off the iron. Any idiot proofing features are a plus for me!
Look what else you get for $10:
~ Adjustable temperature control with 20 different heat settings
~ Tangle-free swivel cord
~ Cool tip
~ Chrome barrel with a safety stand
~ Dual voltage
~ Two year limited warranty
So how well does it perform?
To operate the Conair 3/4 Instant Heat Curling Iron, plug it in, then select your preferred heat setting by twisting the dial to the appropriate number from 1 to 20. Conair suggests 1-5 for delicate, thin easy-to-curl hair; 6-10 for average to thick, or treated hair; 11-15 for thick or wavy hair; and 16-20 for hard to curl, coarse hair. The dial is easy to adjust, and makes an audible click at each setting so you know you've got it set where you want it.
After you adjust the heat setting, press the "on" button. The indicator light comes on and begins to flash. When the desired temperature setting is reached the light stops flashing and remains illuminated. And I must say I was impressed with the "Instant Heat" feature. The Conair 3/4 Instant Heat Curling Iron heats to the desired temperature in a quick 60 seconds.
Gather a section of DRY hair, press the curl release lever and wind the hair around the hot barrel. Hold briefly, then unwind the hair and press the curl release.
The curl release lever works just peachy. The lever has ridges on it so your thumb doesn't slip. And it holds the hair tightly - even my fine, slippery hair. Some curling irons I've tried don't hold the hair tightly, but the Conair 3/4 Instant Heat Curling Iron really has a nice, tight lever and my hair doesn't slip out.
Now especially at the highest heat setting of 20, this baby is REALLY HOT! With my hard to curl hair, I've been using the higher settings, at about 16. Using the higher heat setting and curling smaller sections of hair, I can achieve a really curly look. It helps to not comb or bush the hair that's been curled until it cools. The curls set in better that way and will last longer. With the smaller 3/4 barrel, I can get all the curls I want. Or if I'm in the mood for looser, more free flowing curls, I'll just roll more hair at a time. The Conair really is a super styling tool.
Another thing I like about the Conair 3/4 Instant Heat Curling Iron is that the handle also has ridges, which help you keep a good grip. Have you ever dropped a hot curling iron? I have, and it ain't a pretty sight. Hopefully you can dodge out of the way, or at least not be dense enough to try and catch it with your hand like I did one time! So the easy to grip handle on the Conair is another plus for me.
When you're through styling your hair, just press the "off" button to turn off the iron. If, however, you forget to turn it off, the automatic shut off will turn it off for you in 80 minutes. 80 minutes is a pretty long time, though, so do try to get in the habit of turning it off with the "off" button.
~ A couple of things I don't like
The so-called safety stand is a small chrome stand that flips up for use. I don't know how, but a few times this stand gets folded back up and the hot iron comes perilously close the the surface it's resting on. I've had to watch to make sure the stand is up whenever I set the curling iron down. I'd like it better if the safety stand was not something that flipped up or down, but was a permanent feature of the iron itself.
Another thing that bothers me is the on and off buttons are so darned small! And they are very close together as well. You've really got to eyeball them to see which is which.
~ Final thoughts and recommendations
Conair 3/4 Instant Heat Curling Iron is a great styling tool, and with 20 heat settings there is plenty of room for styling options. If you're really in a hurry the Instant Heat feature is nice. Just 60 seconds to heat up and you're ready to style. This is an inexpensive styling tool with all the features you need.
The Conair 3/4 Instant Heat Curling Iron is good for creating smaller, tighter curls. If you've got hard to curl hair, this tool will help you get those curls. And if you don't have a lot of time, the Instant Heat feature is a plus.
Remember these cautions, please:
Curling irons can burn. Really burn. Don't touch your scalp, or anything else for that matter, with a hot iron. Keep it out of children's grasp at all times, and do not leave it unattended.
Conair also has these other sizes available: 1/2", 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2". And like I said, you can't have too many styling tools!
