| amy99rm's Full Review: Conair Fabric Steamer Deluxe |
If you are a person who must wear professional office attire everyday and is tired of constantly ironing or those huge laundry bills, then this steamer is for you! I was so tired of ironing all my shirts, especially early in the morning when I realize I have nothing pressed. I hate ironing. Hate it hate it! So this steamer is a dream....
Now I am an EBay addict (read my review), so when I saw the price of this thing (about $110) I thought, "There's no way I'll be able to afford it". Well, I found it on Ebay for, get this $30!!! AND it came with a hand-held travel steamer. I haven't tried the travel one yet, so this review is ONLY on the regular, full-size, upright steamer. But $30 for a $110 steamer!?! I had to take advantage of that!
The steamer came in its original box. I don't know if the seller opened it before hand, but it did NOT arrive with instructions. No warranty card, pamphlet, etc. I can't say that this is a manufacture's issue or the seller's. I will contact ConAir shortly and provide an update later on. The steamer wasn't too hard to put together, though. There was the base, complete with water container. The water container easily slips in and out of the base, but does have a secure attachment, so don't worry about water leaking from the base. The container is measured on the side by the amount of steaming time you'll get out of so much water. The cord even stores inside the base, so you just pull it out as long as you want it and then push a button and it hides right back inside! Very nice. There are a few pieces to assemble. It would have been easier with the instructions, but oh well.
This model is great because it has a pole that is about 4 1/2 feet tall with a hanger on the top so your clothes are right at eye level while you're steaming them. That's really nice. The hose is a perfect length for clothes, and there is an extra arm attachment if you want to do drapes or something. The arm is about 2 feet long, which makes the hose about 6 feet or so. Not really long enough for tall drapes, but it helps.
With anticipation building, I set out on my trial run. I grabbed a linen skirt from my closet, covered in wrinkles. I hung it on the provided hanger and turned on my "dream machine". It takes about a minute to heat up, just like the box says. I did not feel any heat in the handle, at first. The box says it is a "Stay-cool handle", but I don't know... It sure did heat up fast after I started to use it. It got so hot I dropped the thing and a little hot water got on my leg! Ouch! So I decided to try to extra arm attachment to see if that would provide a little more protection. It did, but the steamer didn't seem to be as powerful. It took about 5 minutes to steam a long linen skirt.
I periodically checked the original handle while steaming, and it didn't seam to get as hot as that first time. Putting the extra arm on did help with the heat, but didn't seem as powerful, like I said earlier. I'm sure if you had an oven mitt handy it would work really well. Improvise!
Overall, the steamer has a nice appearance. It is white with a black hose and a silver pole with a black hanger on top. As I said, the cord stores in the base, which is helpful. It comes with three heads for the steamer. All black plastic, one has little black combs, one has finer, white combs, and one has red felt for very delicate fabrics. It appears to be very durable, and is, so far, very reliable. (I've used it for about two weeks now.) It can be cleaned by just wiping the outside with a damp cloth. The water container has a lid that is maybe two inches in diameter, so you can take it off and bleach it to keep it clean. I would suggest using filtered water to cut down on cleaning and avoid calcium or other deposits on your clothes
I suggest not steaming all your clothes at once, but to do them one or two at a time (depending on the size), as the hose does get pretty hot.
I'll of course write updates as a use this more and more, especially if I have problems or I can't find instructions.
