| susidee34's Full Review: Concern Diatomaceous Earth Crawling Insect Killer |
Gotta nasty little bug you don't know how to kill? Want to be a conscientious murderer? Try Diatomaceous Earth, the safe way to solve your problems.
I have been in the landscape industry since 1988 and have had my share of chemicals that I have walked through, sprayed, spilled and used. I have never been a huge believer in any type of chemicals - I do not fertilize my grass nor my flowers with anything except natural or organic products. Therefore, when confronted with pesky critters, I was in a quandary - what to do, what to do? I came across this little product and have been thoroughly pleased.
My first encounter was with silverfish and earwigs. In a basement apartment, I found these guys were coming in around the foundation and windows, no matter what I did. By simply taking a pump type mister (made for dry chemicals) I sprayed the interior of the apartment around all baseboards and window frames - bye, bye bugs! The great thing about the product is you don't have to be afraid of household pets or children getting it on them and becoming ill - it is not harmful to them. Using the product inside the home, it will last forever, however outside you will have to make more frequent applications.
Snails, slugs and earwigs - outside. Sprinkle around the base of your plants and this product will eliminate these devils without harming the environment. You will, of course, have to reapply after a hard rain, but it is inexpensive and easy to apply. Diatomaceous Earth is made up of ground fossils and seashells, so you can imagine the damage it will do to the tender creatures that feed on your expensive plants at night.
To put it nicely, it is a contact insecticide that causes abrasions resulting in a loss of body fluids and eventual dehydration - bye, bye bugs! Diatomaceous Earth WILL NOT harm earthworms! Major plus factor in any garden. It does not harm birds or other creatures that are blessed with a digestive system.
However, as with any type of chemical, even the friendly ones, PLEASE wear a protective mask when applying them. In fact, it wouldn't hurt to wear goggles too, but few people do this. Please always follow manufacturers directions when using any products, please store safely when not in use, and please discard the empty containers in a safe manner.
