| soberley's Full Review: Concord Camera Eye-Q Go LCD Digital Camera |
I was slated to go on the road with my job. I had a Sony Mavica camera and liked it a lot, but as I was going to Washington D.C. I didn't know if I took the camera with me that it would also return with me (Those who have been around D.C. for any length of time know what I mean). I was pondering my way through the electronics section at Target and WHAM! There it was a relativly inexpensive solution to my problem! A Concord Eye Q Go LCD camera! It was small light weight and still had a decent sized LCD screen on it so I would not have to use the view finder to snap Shots. I looked the package over really good and decided to purchase the item. I think it was about 59 dollars at that time. I got the item home and tried a few snap shots....they were of OK quality so I went the next day and bought the accesories, batteries, case, memory stick...etc...
The camera itself is very small maybe 3x4 inches and light weight. The on board memory I think is 8 MB enough for 33 very low quality pictures. But it has a slot where you can add SD memory so I added 32 MBs of memory. Which was another 35 dollars.
This camera also has the ability to take movies and they can be as long as you want, but there is no sound so when you play it back it kind of reminds me of the old 8mm cameras where everyone is just waving to say Hello. The video quality is pretty poor and there is a lot of digital "Streaking" when you move side to side. I would not rely on this as your camcorder, but it will take somewhat viewable movies in a pinch. (Private investigators beware! it may be the "John" Your after or an ape from the zoo picture quality is not that great!)
The picture quality was OK if the subject was not moving in any way shape or form. Also if the light was to low and it set off the auto flash then it made everything turn pure white in the picture. Also if you try to get too close up, even in Macro mode the picture turns out blurry. So now that that has been said let us review.....
If you want to take a picture of a rock in sunlight...this is the best camera I can think of... provided your not too close to the rock. If you don't like taking pictures of things close up, moving, living, etc.... this is the camera for you. Out of about 70 pictures 1/2 are blurry. I did find out a hint though....push the button and then don't move for 5 seconds and the picture quality is greatly increased.
The construction of the unit is as good as it's picture taking ability...poor in other words. It is light weight and small, but also plastic and cheap looking. There is no auto switch between Macro, Standard, far off pictures it is a slide switch on the front of the camera. The menu buttons are kind of small and antogonizing for a large fingered man, but the menu system itself is fairly easy to use. The LCD screen on the back is one of the best features...so to justify the money I have spent on the camera I have told myself that I paid 58.99 for the LCD screen and .01 for the rest of the camera....that way I have lessened the nightmares of being ripped off and can sleep better at night.
The first time I loaded the software onto my computer (Compaq 1.2 MHZ, ME) It did not load correctly, so I took it off and put it back on...still no luck. I did eventually get it to act like a web cam ( another feature mentioned on the box, but not all that great. No sound!!!!), but I could never get it to work so I could transfer all my golden pictures form the camera to my computer. I figured no great loss since the only ones that would turn out are the ones of the far away rocks. I did get it to work on my work laptop though (NEC 700 MGHZ windows 2000) So I transfered my pictures. I did go to the Air and Space museum in D.C and took all kinds of pictures... I got really good at deleting pictures that day my thumb has recovered since then.
Needless to say I was kind of hoping that that particular camera would "Dissappear" before I left D.C. and then my wife may have let me get another camera. I even left it sitting on a table after lunch and someone came up with my camera and prompty returned it (Crap....they must have smelled the stench of worthless on it too!). Ahh well, I am somewhat smarter and somewhat poorer, but I hope this will keep someone from making the same mistake I did. I threw myself on the grenade to save the rest of you!
