Timo Maas has been absolutely everywhere lately. A year or two ago no one had heard of him and then BOOM, everyone and their mother was signing him up for remixes. Most think Timo hit the big time with his remix of Doom's Night by Azzido Da Bass, but remixes for Madonna, BT, and Fatboy Slim didn't hurt.
So what does Timo bring with "Connected", his second major mix release? Let's take a look...
Two discs huh?
Yes, 2 discs seems to be the norm these days. I sort of like it. Twice the music, for 1.5x the price! Disc 1 is Progressive Trance and House. Disc 2 strays a bit more and tosses in some Breakbeat and some straight up House. Mr. Maas gets bonus points for playing more than one style of records. Too often a 2 disc set will be too similar across discs. I like to listen to both of the discs, if not back to back, within a couple of hours of each other. Timo makes this a joy by throwing two different styled sets at you.
Does he pimp his remixes throughout the whole set?
Surprisingly no. I count only 2 remixes and one original Timo track across both discs. Credit the man for being somewhat humble :) Don't buy this mix looking for Timo Maas remixes, buy it for Timo Maas mixing.
Does he drone on and on with brainless 4/4 tracks-by-numbers?
Again no. I was actually surprised by the comparitively "lightweight" tracks included compared to live sets I've heard elsewhere. I have heard essential mixes from Timo that border on hard house. He must be saving that side of him for the clubs because it is no where to be found here.
Does the mixing contain a signature?
It does. I don't know if you would instantly yell Timo, Timo, Timo if you heard this set playing out from a car, but you can tell that a certain style was in mind. It has the same depth of a Digweed set, but the creative flair of John Kelley.
How is the mixing?
Superb baby! Smooth, tight, and exacting. There are a couple of overlapped intro/outros, but mostly beat mixed throughout.
Overall, I think this is a set that might take some getting used to. On first listen I didn't like it so much. Maybe I was expecting something different, who knows. Anyway, by the third listen I started picking up on some of the little things that make this an impressive set. The slight offset of a kick drum that teases you into the next track...the selection of vocal tracks that even a vocal track hater can't hate that much :)
Connected has a good track selection, great organization, and it leaves you itching for more.
