Pros: Unparalleled climbing traction, very stable and predictable, even at high speeds.

The Bottom Line: A perfect tire for those who ride often in less-than-perfect conditions.

| sammy_marvelle's Full Review: Continental Tires Survival Pro |
The first time I laid eyes on the Continental Survival Pro was at the 1999 CABDA convention. The Continental booth is always a favorite of mine but the Survival Pro really turned me into a Conti fan for good.
Back in 1999 the tire trend was the semi-slick. Everyone was gearing up for the racer and not enough for the everyday rider. The Survival Pro, however, went against the grain more than any tire on the market. People who have been around the sport of mountain biking have refered to it as 'Farmer John's for the next millenium'.
With its wide open "Endless Edge" tread pattern, the Survival Pro is at home in the most severe of trail conditions. It has the ability to dig in deep on long, steep inclines. My favorite climb with these tires came on a steep pitch covered with pine needles and they stuck to the trail the whole time.
Coming back down is pretty much the same story. Conti's "Endless Edge" allows for the a part of the tread to be in contact with the ground at all times, making it a very predictable and stable tire at high speeds.
The other advantage is the 2.3" width. Wider tires have more tire-to-ground contact, which obviously increases traction, but they can also be run at a much lower tire pressure without fear of pinch flats.
This is not a tire for the off road racer, however. That is unless it's an early spring race through sand and mud. The Survival Pro is too bulky and too heavy to be a true competition tire, and since the knobs are so spread out, the performance drops off sharply on any hardpack or pavement. But for those of us who desire comfort and traction in the most demanding of conditions, the Survival Pro is one of your best options.
