chewy1987's Full Review: Continuum by John Mayer (Adult Alternative)
"Continuum" is singer, song writer John Mayer's third studio album. Mayer released "Room For Squares", then followed that up with "Heaver Things". "Continuum" was released on September the 12th here in the United States. The album has been nominated for more then one grammy award, including, album of the year, best pop vocal album and best male pop vocal performance. The album debuted on the U.S. Billboard chart at number two selling 300,186 copies in the first week. To date the album has sold over a million copies giving Mayer his 3rd consecutive platnium album.
"Continuum" kicks off with the first single "Waiting On The World To Change". The song has a good beat and wonderful lyrics referring to todays generation. Track 2 " I Don't Trust Myself(With Loving You)" is more of a slowed down jazzy track with clever lyrics such as "Who do you love? Me or the thought of me?"."Belief" is the next song which is one of my favorite. The beat with help from guitar player Ben Harper catches your ear right from the beginning and you are hooked all the way to the end."Gravity" is the next song, which most true John Mayer fans would have already heard on "TRY" an album released by the John Mayer Trio. "Gravity" is a slower song with a real soulful attitude towards it."The Heart Of Life" follows "Gravity" keeping the outstanding lyrics rolling,"Vultures" another track from "TRY" is also one of my favorite Mayer songs, Mayer puts his singing to the test on this track which I enjoy. "Continuum" then gets to "Stop This Train" which is a deep song where Mayer talks about personal issues such as loosing his parents. The song is very deep and passionate, a very good song. Mayer follows that up with "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room". "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room" is my favorite song that John Mayer has made. The lyrics are moving and the guitar playing balances everything out perfectly, overall I feel this is the best song on the album. Next Mayer covers Jimi Hendrix's "Bold As Love". Mayer does a nice job on covering one of the best guitar player's of all time, Mayer Then goes on with "Dreaming With A Broken Heart", "In Repair" and finished the album with" Im Gonna Find Another You".
I love this entire album from beginning to end. I enjoy some songs more then others like "Belief", "Vultures" and "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room". I admire how well rounded the album is having a wide variety of sounds from jazz to blues to up beat songs. I also love the inside of the album cover, the photo inside his studio where it says " This Is What My Heart Looks Like". I feel that shows the work and dedication put into to producing this platnium album.
I bought "Continuum" for the simple reason that I am a huge Mayer fan. I own all of his albums, studio or live. I feel Mayer is one of the top guitar players in music today if not the top guitar player. I also feel he is one of the best talents in music, again if not the top talent. I was expecting huge things from this album and I was not let down one bit when the opening track hit my ears. "Continuum" met every expectation I had and Mayer did not let me down for the first time as I expected he would not. Anyone who is not a big John Mayer fan should get this album and then give him another chance. I would recommend this album to anyone who is a true music lover.
A few things I did not like about the album was there were only 12 songs and 2 of them were already released on "TRY" and one was a cover song. I wish Mayer could have given the fans more then 9 new songs to hold them over until he heads back into the studio for a new album. A possible solution could be to just add a few more songs to the album to keep "die hard" Mayer fans happy. That is really my only problem with "Continuum".
So if you are a music fan looking for a new music fix and you have not stumbled across John Mayer's "Continuum" I suggest you give it a shot.
