Monnie1976's Full Review: Continuum by John Mayer (Rock)
I was completely floored when I heard John Mayer's most recent album Continuum. 13
Of course, I always knew he had talent. Try ignoring his warm voice, thoughtful lyrics and musical chops if you need evidence. Continuum though elevates all these traits with a vibrant, passionate feel. You definitely get the sense all these songs come from a soulful place.
The album has an amazing blend of love songs, social commentary tracks and eloquent songs about life. Despite covering a lot of different topics, the album flows cohesively giving the listener a satisfying listen long past the first, or for that matter, the 100th.
First let's talk about his first single from the album "Waiting For The World To Change" with its fantastic arrangement that toys with blues, pop and soul. The lyrics manage not to be preachy yet still get a point across with intelligent lyrics "when you own the information of they can bend it how they want". His vocals are just the right balance of passion and laidback realism. "Belief" is a bit more serious with moodier, more brooding tones about how fighting to change beliefs may be futile. Other songs about the political climate include "Vultures" which is bluesy and brilliant and Mayer hits you with a downright sexy falsetto. (You won't hear me say that often)
Speaking of sexy let's discuss his love songs. Even when he's lamenting a relationship going up in flames he's absolutely irresistable. "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room" has savvy lyrics that really paint the picture of knowing love is ending and having to surrender yourself to that helplessness. "I Don't Trust Myself" is a throbbing ode to vulnerability with its pulsing organ and engaging vocals. Every love song here is fantastic from the tender "Dreaming With A Broken Heart" to the cautious hopefulness of "In Repair".
"Stop This Train" is poignant for me. Life just rushes by and you wish it would slow down and you could stop. Other time you treasure every moment and hope it never stops. He captures that crazy relationship with time beautifully. "The Heart of Life" is a sweet gem capturing my whole year in one line "Know it won't all go the way it should but I know the heart of life is good."
Every song on this album should be on this album. There is no filler. Its completely organic. Mayer proves he is on a musical continuum evolving to the next level for him. He inserts a soulful, almost more sensous sound to his already admirable abilities and the results are unforgettable. If you like anyone from Marvin Gaye to Dave Matthews to Eric Clapton you are going to appreciate this album.
With any trilogy, says John Mayer, the third in the series blows it open. On Continuum the singer/songwriter/guitar slinger meets that challenge head-...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
