Pros: Non-stick, wonderful roaster/slow cooker. Can be used to keep foods warm.
Cons: Needs lots of room for storage.
After working all week and cooking when we can, Sunday has become our day to enjoy a good meal. That being said, most times we also both try to do as little as possible on our day of relaxation. We also like to make meal that are great for leftovers for either Monday or Tuesday nights meal. And we have a big spot in our heart for cooking holiday meals at our house. Meaning there is never enough room in our oven for all of the foods that we are preparing. These times are perfect for the Cook's Essentials 10 qt. Non-Stick Stainless Steel Roaster. We can slow cook or roast a meal all day Sunday, or have that extra room for a small roast or casserole for holidays.
Features and Specs.
This 10 qt. stainless steel roaster has a removable non-stick cooking pan. The size of this unit is 18 3/4 long by 12 1/2 wide by 10 high. The temperature settings range from 0 to 450 degrees and there is an indicator light to let you know that the roaster is heating. The heating elements completely circle the unit for even heating. The lid has a viewable glass window underneath the center handle along with slots to allow excess steam to escape. The non-stick surface is DuPont ScratchGuard and allows you to use metal utensils. There is also a removable steel rack with fold able handles that allows grease to drain away and helps for easy removal of roasts. On each side, above the outside handles, there is a lid rest for holding the lid while you check whatever you are cooking.
What Can You Make In It?
We have used this roaster to cook many things in the last year. Its great for making large batches of lasagna and macaroni and cheese. Also roasting a small chicken or a small ham is very easy in this roaster. The specs say that this roster will hold a 12 lb. Turkey or a 10 lb. Ham, and I say that this is a pretty fair assessment. Our tradition on Christmas Eve is to steam crab legs which was easily done by adding about an inch of water to the bottom and using the included rack. On New Years day we used this roaster to roast a pork loin along with sauerkraut and hot dogs. This was pretty much our whole New Years dinner in one dish. At lower temperatures it can be used as a slow cooker or a slow roaster by setting the temperature at 250 degrees and tripling the cook time. This product can also be used as a warmer for parties or to keep food warm all day. On those hot days during the summer months it is nice to use this instead of the oven.
Using This Roaster
The first thing that you will learn about this product is that you need to let it preheat. It needs about 15-20 minutes to get to the desired heat. When that heat is obtained the red indicator light will go out. Also dont expect this roaster to cook foods as fast as an oven. A little extra time is need when roasting or baking. Big batches of foods such as Macaroni and Cheese or Lasagna will need a lower temperature and longer cooking time to prevent the dish from burning around the edges. Even still this roaster is perfect for many occasions when time is not an issue. And in my opinions slow cooked food taste much better than oven-baked hurried dishes.
This roaster looks wonderful on the serving table, or where ever you put it. Its stainless steel outside is nicely accented by the black color of the lid handle, and inside cooking pan. I have no problem at all with putting the whole unit out, and keeping it plugged in for warming purposes. It is attractive enough to serve out of.
Cleanup is a Breeze.
The non-stick coating does not allow foods to stick to the inside cooking surface. The inside pan is completely removable and can be cleaned easily with soap and water. The outside is stainless steel and is also very easily cleaned, although you cannot submerge the outside unit in water. The lid and inside rack can easily be cleaned with soap and water also.
Our Recently Cooked Meals
Kents Slow Roasted Garlic Chicken
1 fresh 7-8 lb roasting chicken
1/2 stick butter
6-7 cloves garlic
Set the roaster to between 300-325 degrees. Prepare the chicken by thoroughly rinsing both inside and out. Place chicken in roaster pan on top of rack. Cut butter into 1/4 pats and place half inside the chicken and the other half on top. Chop garlic into small pieces and place half inside and half on top of chicken. Season with salt/pepper to taste. Roast for 4-4 1/2 hours or until done.
Chicken Salad Monday
This recipe uses whatever chicken is left over from the night before. Most times we have a small platter full of leftover chicken which I would guess equals somewhere between 1 1/2 and 2 lbs.
5-6 T mayonnaise
2 T Miracle Whip
1/2 of a medium onion
4 hard boiled eggs
1 tsp. garlic powder
Use a food processor to finely chop the chicken, eggs, and onion. Mix together with remaining ingredients. You may add extra mayonnaise if the salad still appears dry. My wife likes to add dried cranberries and pecans to give it extra zip and crunch. Serve on toast with lettuce.
To Sum Up
The only negative issue that we can come up with is the fact that its large size makes it difficult to store. We were fortunate enough to have room in our pantry for it. All in all this is a perfect solution for people that run out of room when preparing those big meals. After all that was our main reason for buying this roaster. But after we got this product, and did a little experimenting with different foods, it became a main cooking appliance for us. We now use it at least once a week, and most times more. I highly recommend the Cook's Essentials 10 qt. Non-Stick Stainless Steel Roaster to anyone that enjoys cooking. The ease of use, and cleanup make it a perfect solution for keep food warm, slow cooking, steaming or just plain roasting. Check out QVC, and buy one if you love cooking.
