Summary
Davidoff Coolwater is one of the most popular men’s fragrance on the market for more than 25 years. It offers a double fresh-spicy scent which is excellent for starters in fragrances or for those who don’t want to show off.
The Origins
CoolWater was launched back in 1988, more than 15 years ago by Davidoff and the Lancaster-group, after the successful launch of Davidoff Classic (1984) and Zino Davidoff (1986).
The Scent
CoolWater was inspired by the deep blue sea, the hot summer air, the flowers of the trees and the scent mature fruits. This is really an ambivalent smell, sparkling and sensitive and is full with contradictions, like the true man. First, gently and softly later strongly and intensively shows man’s Eros.
The connection between Davidoff cigars and Davidoff CoolWater is Coumarin, which is used to give scent to both cigars and perfumes. However, Coumarin is an essential basic part of all Fougere fragrances. Coumarin is found in many plants, including lavender, woodruff and sweet clover; and also in strawberries, apricots, cherries, and cinnamon. Clear Coumarin alone smells like vanilla but what little flavor it has is bitter.
About Zino Davidoff
Zino Davidoff, the legendary cigar king was born in Belarus in 1906. He early left his motherland and settled down in Italy with his parents. He inherited his passion for tobacco from his parents and quickly became the most successful businessman of this field in Europe. He made a lot of travels to enlarge his knowledge on cigars, including South-Africa, Cuba and Indonesia. It was him who launched the world famous cigar Davidoff Havana. He died in 1994.
The Bottle
The blue color reflects well the freshness of CoolWater, while the square bottle and curvy letters reveal the contrast in the smell, modern and classic at the same time. As this is a popular scent, it is also available in a combined package with an aftershave and showering gel, which is an excellent value for money.
Who Should / Can Use Davidoff CoolWater?
How can you tell a perfume is good for you? This should be based on personal taste with these two general criteria:
1. You should feel comfortable wearing that perfume.
2. People around you accept you wearing it.
So, my first advice is to go to a perfume shop and try it on your wrist. In the first 20-30 minutes you will smell only the head-notes. I recommend to rather go for the body-notes therefore do some shopping and check the scent an hour later. You have to like and your girlfriend also has to like it.
Many people say that CoolWater is an ‘old’ fragrance, however, I don’t agree with this. First, a huge part of men’s fragrances are more than 20 year old, then, good fragrances are more like men’s fashion – changes little by little and the basics remain the same on the long term. What is more, more than 25 years on the market tells me that this fragrance has proven to be a popular scent; many others have just disappeared after 2-3 years, because nobody liked them.
So, because this is a classical perfume, it means two things for you: it is quite proof, you cannot really go wrong with this one, but on the other hand, you won’t be very original, as many people know it and use it. Therefore this can be a good try for starters, or for those, who don’t want to spend much time to discover the perfect fragrance for them, those who just want some kind of perfume.
Also, if you are the guy who goes with the latest trends and is up-to-date in fashion, CoolWater won’t be the good match for your trendy clothes. CoolWater is more the guy who pays attention to his clothes, but prefers the non-extravagant look. By my opinion, CoolWater with jeans & a polo shirt are a very good match together.
Then I prefer the man image that doesn’t show off with his clothes and smell; they are solid and characteristic but show their value only from close observation. I think CoolWater is an excellent carrier of this image, so if you like to behave this way, you should try it.
If you are a woman and want to offer a scent for you partner, Davidoff CoolWater is a safe try.
When and where to wear Davidoff CoolWater
Because this is fresh perfume, I wouldn’t wear it for a love night (you can try something more spice for the night), and because of the spicy tones, not in the morning either. Mid-day and afternoon with leisure activities are the best for Cool Water. For sport activities, a simpler, clearly fresh fragrance is better.
Because of the erotic background in the fragrance, I wouldn’t risk it for a serious business meeting, however it is a great perfume for all occasions with women; most of my woman-friends just love the smell of CoolWater, despite it is widely used.
I hope it is clear, that when you use a fragrance, it is essential to use either smell-free or same-smell shampoo, showering gel, shaving foam and aftershave. Personally, I only use smell-free bathing stuff because this leaves me the complete freedom to choose the scent and the smell of perfumes are much better regulated in intensity and integrity then those of shampoos et al.
To complement CoolWater, I would choose a fresher, sportier citrus based fragrance and a spicier, heavier fragrance for the evening.
