| badragon's Full Review: Coppertone Sport Ultra Sweatproof Dry Lotion |
Coppertone Sport Ultra Sweatproof Dry Lotion is designed for the athlete. It is waterproof and protects against UVA and UVB rays. (The UVA ones are the ones that will burn you quickly, but the UVB rays are also harmful over the long term.) This product also claims to provide all day protection.
I am fair-skinned and burn easily – made worse by some medications. As a result I don’t leave the house, even here in the northeast, without some kind of sun protection during the summer months. This sounded like just the ticket.
Coppertone Sport Ultra Sweatproof Dry Lotion has a very light fragrance so it doesn’t attract insects. It is a nice white lotion and it does feel dry after you put it on – not sticky like a day-at-the-beach. It is also PABA free (a good thing because the PABA causes irritation in a lot of people) and hypoallergenic. You are supposed to apply it ”liberally to all exposed areas at least 15 minutes before exposure.” I don’t know about you, but I am usually running out the door before I remember that I am not wearing sunblock.
It also recommends that you reapply after “prolonged swimming, excessive perspiration, vigorous activity or toweling.” I don’t swim long or exercise vigorously. Yes, I admit it, I am a couch potato. But I have been known to perspire. From experience, this needs to be reapplied about as often as most other similar products.
The one I used was a 30 SPF. That means you can stay in the sun 30 times longer than if you weren’t wearing anything. I mean lotion, of course. In my case, that is about 15 to 20 minutes, so with the lotion I can stay out for . . . let’s see . . .10 hours. Wow – that is all day! It does work extremely well, although I find that I have to reapply it several times.
So what’s wrong with it?? First, even though it feels dry going on, it still blocks pores like any other similar lotion. So it will cause you to sweat more and can contribute to heatstroke and/or dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids. The second problem is that you can’t touch anything plastic. There is a powdery residue that will rub off on many plastic items including the inside of car doors , tablecloths and some umbrellas. I have not, however, found it on my clothing, so this one has to be your call.
Coppertone Sport Ultra Sweatproof Dry Lotion is a good sun blocking lotion for adults and older children. It is not recommended for younger children. If you want to keep your creamy complexion all summer or to tan very slowly I highly recommend it. If you are riding in his car on a first date you might want to try something else.
