Pros: The lotion spray is a great innovation, I use more sunscreen because of it.
Cons: Not completely sting-proof.

| forkids's Full Review: Coppertone Water For Baby |
I’m eternally loyal to Water BABIES, the first lotion that I bought for my kids and still use today. It has been around since 1987 but I’ve only been using it for the last four years. This year they came out with the new pump spray, it’s becoming one of the preferred packaging sizes in the Coppertone lineup and comes in Sun Protection Factor 30 and 45.
Coppertone was invented by a Miami Beach pharmacist 50 + years ago and now commands about 35% of the suncare business with Banana Boat (Playtex) in second place. Water BABIES logo is dominated by the 47 year old Little Miss Coppertone graphic which has now come to symbolize suncare protection for kids.
We bought right into it and have been loyal consumers of the stuff even if we use other products in addition to the backbone of our collection. The pink container with the purple top has become synonymous with Coppertone’s Water BABIES and I applaud the addition of the pump spray and prefer it to the squeeze bottle of lotion. It is much more convenient and definitely cuts down on the globs that come out if you squeeze too hard.
Product Features:
• Two SPF’s 30 and 45 – 30 is perfectly safe, 45 is just more.
• Price: 4 oz. lotion is $7.19 at planetrx.com, 8 oz. is $7.79.
Spray lotion is $8.99 and cheapest at Wal-Mart.com - $7.47
Banana Boat Baby Sunblock is SPF 50 (not significant) and the same price as Coppertone at Wal-Mart. Banana Boat is one of Coppertone’s largest competitors.
• Fragrance: has a distinctive odor like the other Coppertone products but this has more of a “baby lotion smell or baby powder odor” that’s a little bit different than the normal Coppertone line.
• Appearance and texture: Lotion is white in appearance and goes on very easily. It leaves a slightly more slippery sheen than the mousse products and takes a little rubbing to get it blended in properly. The spray product should never be directly applied to the face, but applied in your palm and gently dabbed on or rubbed on. I keep it away from my kids’ eyes as best I can because it does sting despite the product’s claims otherwise.
Because it’s a spray lotion and not just a “spray” of oil, it needs to be blended into the skin. The spray pumps out small spots of white lotion that stay put and it’s not the least bit watery. Because we now prefer the spray over the lotion, the task of getting kids ready for the pool has become less dreadful.
• Overall Results: Like any other sunscreen, I need to reapply it every few hours though it claims to be waterproof for 80 minutes in water. Use good judgement as only a few bad burns as a child can contribute to horrible skin cancer when they’re older. Babies 6 months and younger are to get the ok from the doctor, first before use.
If applied 20-30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every few hours or after long lengths of time in the water or toweled off, it does exactly as it’s supposed to. While my kids are in favor of the colored lotions and mousses, this product wins two enthusiastic thumbs up, just keep away from their eyes.
• Coppertone Water BABIES is not just for babies. The whole family can use it though I prefer the original scented Coppertone to the Water BABIES for myself. I tend to use more sunscreen than before which is only a good thing.
