If you have children in your house, you probably have a couple of bottles of sunscreen around that are specially formulated, or at least marketed, towards kids. The choices on the store shelves are staggering, but one of the oldest, tried-and-true brands, is a staple in our house – Water Babies by Coppertone.
It is absolutely essential to protect babies and children’s delicate skin with sunscreen. I recently heard on the news (I believe it was on the Today Show) that one blistering sunburn can double your chances of skin cancer. YIKES! I sure don’t want to do that to my kids! Most doctors will recommend using a sunscreen with a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15. This number is fine on and everyday basis (like when you are running errands or playing outside for short periods of time), but it really isn’t adequate for a day at the beach for a couple of hours at the pool. Water Babies packs a punch with a SPF of 30. It claims to offer waterproof protection for 80 minutes. This formula is also hypoallergenic, and non-stinging. This has come to be very important to me because some brands of sunscreen seem to burn Adam’s eyes once he gets into the water with them off. No problems with Water Babies! The label of Water Babies also states that it protects from both VUA and UVB rays, and that it contains special moisturizers to keep skin from drying. Its active ingredients include the following:
Ethylhexly P-Methoxycinnamate
2-Ethyhexyl Salicylate
Homosalate
Oxybenzone
Water Babies is a creamy white lotion and comes in a bottle with a flip top cap which has never clogged. It smells like typical sunscreen that is not at all offensive. The bottle has little bumps on the sides of it, so it’s easier to hold onto, once your hands are all slippery. I will warn you that once the bottle get warm from sitting in the sun, the substance thins a bit, and tends to come out of the bottle rather quickly.
When I’m in my super-mom mode, I apply Water Babies to my kids at least 30 minutes before they get into the water. This allows the skin to absorb the sunscreen for the best protection. I usually put sunscreen on my toddler before she puts on her swimsuit so I don’t miss an inch of her sweet soft skin. I usually squirt a quarter size amount in my hand, then rub my hands together before applying it to her so it isn’t so cold. I do the routine twice to cover all her exposed skin. Also, don’t forget to cover your kids face (avoiding the eyes) and their ears. The top edge of Katie’s ears seems to be her most vulnerable part!
Your doctor will have the best advice regarding sunscreen for your child, and most don’t recommend it for babies under 6 months of ago. Talk with you own pediatrician about sun protection for these little ones. And, very importantly, don’t forget to reapply Water Babies when the protection time has run out, and prior to each time your child gets back into the water for a long period.
Despite my zealous use of Water Babies, even Katie has developed tan lines this summer. But the burn has been kept to a minimum thanks for Water Babies. And I want to keep her skin as soft and flawless as I can for as long as I can!
