We spend a lot of time out on the water fishing, and sunburn is a constant risk. I hate sunburn; there is nothing worse than getting crisped and dreading that first shower afterwards!
Because I don't like being burned, I am pretty good about applying sunscreen and keeping it on. We headed out to fish on Saturday morning, and after a short while I started looking for the sunscreen. The only kind I could find in the boat was Water Babies. I have never had good experiences with this brand of sunscreen with my kids, but I wanted sun protection and this was the only kind available.
My skin is fair, but I don't really burn all that easily. I applied a healthy dose of Water Babies and set out to enjoy myself, periodically re-applying when I could feel my skin getting hot in the sun. After several hours we had both had enough sun and headed back to shore.
To my distress, I realized I was burned. Crisped. Both shoulders were red and sore and my legs were burning. I also burned my neck and my ears but I take full responsibility for those body parts, as I simply didn't apply sunscreen to those areas. I have fairly long hair and almost always wear it down; this particular day I put it up in a high pony tail and topped my head off with a sun visor. It never occurred to me that my neck and ears would burn because they never have before. (I am now wishing I would have thought it through more carefully, because sunburned ears have to be the most painful thing I have experienced in a long, long time.)
Positives
This sunscreen goes on very easily and is quickly absorbed into the skin. Considering applying it to small children, this is an excellent feature. Have you ever tried to run sunscreen on a squirming little one and both of you ended up frustrated because it just wouldn't rub in? Water Babies is quickly absorbed, a good feature.
Water Babies is also reasonably priced in comparison to most of the other sunscreen products on the market.
The fragrance is barely noticeable, and what you do notice is not at all unpleasant. I was afraid that it would draw bees (of which I am absolutely terrified) but I didn't experience this problem. I have also never seen any allergice reactions to the product when I have used it on myself or on my children.
Negatives
This sunscreen simply does not work effectively for long-term exposure to the sun, even with frequent re-applications. For short-term exposure it is probably quite adequate, but I wouldn't trust my children to it for an entire day in the boat.
A sunscreen has to work and work effectively in my opinion. Water Babies did not protect my skin, and I have been feeling miserable now for two days.
I will never purchase this product again, and I do not recommend it. There are far better sunscreen products out there that work more effectively.
