Pros: Lots of equipment, plenty of classes, a place to hang out with friends
Cons: Not really a con but I would like the option of decaffeinated coffee.
I have had a fun month checking out health & fitness centers in my local area. I had thought that the one I would be joining was Family Fitness, but that didn't happen.
My final stop was at Cor Fitness, in New Port Richey. It is located on the busy U.S.19, and with road works, can be a nightmare to get to. The parking lot is in the front of the large building. You have to go up steps to get into it. The lobby area is large, and there is a welcoming front desk.
I first went on my own on Monday February 11th. I had dropped Len off at the F.O.E (Eagles), and got to the center just before mid-day. I asked if I could look around, and showed my Optimum H.M.O. card. The lady behind the front desk had me sign in, and suggested that I might like to check out the class that was about to start. This was the Silver Sneakers class, for the 65 and over.
I sat on a chair, did weights, bands, had a stepper behind me, and used a ball. As I only turned 65 this month, and am fit, I was bored with the class.
I returned on the Thursday with Len, and asked for a tour of the facility. The girl was the instructor for the class I had been to. She recognized me, and I explained that we hadn't had a tour. She showed us the machines, the free weight area, the bathrooms, the room where I had done the class, then outside where they have a pool, and activities in the summer months. On the way back was a large social area with lots of tables and chairs, free WIFI, and free regular coffee. I couldn't help make a comment that they should have decaffeinated coffee, as the caffeine takes calcium out of the bones, and they are a health club. She gave us lots of literature.
The class that was on was the Zumba Gold, so Len sat at one of the tables, while I went in and did 15 minutes of it. It was fun, and fast. I came out and Len was talking to a friend from the Eagles, so I did 10 minutes on a bicycle.
Before we left we joined, and I set up an appointment for a free fit assessment the following Thursday. So last Thursday we got there and asked for the person who was going to do it. He had us both fill out our health information, and then talked to us about our goals. I don't need to loose weight, I eat a healthy diet because of Len's health issues, so the only thing he suggested was to gain muscle. He said that he could work more slowly with Len, and then gave us a price of over $200 for first and last month, plus a fee, and then reduced it to $169. This wasn't what I expected. When Len joined other clubs they went round with him, showed him each piece of equipment he should work on, and gave him the amount of times to do each one. This didn't happen, and so we decided not to take him up on it.
As we finished up I went on one of the bicycles, and then noticed it was almost noon, and time for the Silver Sneakers class. I thought it would be good for Len. He managed about 15 to 20 minutes of it, and I did finish it, but won't be doing it anymore.
Yesterday we went for the Senior Social Free Breakfast (members 65+), and arrived 30 minutes early. Len sat down with a gentleman who belongs to the Eagles, so I did 3 miles on the bicycle, and then went on 6 of the machines. I came back just before 10.00 and we had numbers on our tables. The tables got called and we had a yogurt parfait, donut holes, coffee cake, and coffee. Len could only eat the yogurt. I left him with a Marine, and the other guy, and went and did the last 30 minutes of a Step class. I loved it. It was fast and furious. I kept up with the steps but didn't always do the exact steps the instructor was doing. After the class she came up to me, and said that she hoped I would come again, and that she was amazed at how well I kept up. I did mention that I am pretty fit.
I went and found Len and he said that he wanted to go on the recumbent bike. I set it up on manual for him, and level 1. I got myself several cups of water while he was on it. When he finished I passed water over to him. They have several water fountains. On the way out I put my towel into the dirty linen basket.
I really enjoyed yesterday. I had so much more energy after my workout.
A little more about it. You are given a card similar to store ones, so you just beep yourself in. There are towels, and disinfectant sprays, near the front. The equipment is fairly new, and the fitness center is clean. During the week they are open 24 hours, at the weekend 7 am to 8 pm. The club is staffed when open. They have Kids supervised room, a hair salon, spa services, and chiropractic and wellness massage. Call for details, and prices where applicable.
On Tuesdays they have a noon Senior Social Free Lunch (Ages 65+) Members and guests. We haven't been to one of these yet, but are meeting a couple we know at 10.45 on Tuesday. The lady and I will do the Zumba class, while the men socialize, and perhaps a little workout, and then we will check out the lunch.
There are so many classes I would like to attend but I think 3 a weeks will be good, and then 1 time working with the machines.
