Pros:Rich creamy and delicious, they use whole cherries and grow their own chocolate beans
Cons:Not a low calorie or low carb treat
The Bottom Line: A delectable Valentine treat...but be careful not to eat too many!

Since this is a pretty generic category, I am reviewing one brand in particular, Queen Anne Dark Chocolate Cordial Cherries

Who can resist the taste of a whole cherry ensconced in a creamy cordial filling then covered with the deep delectable taste of dark chocolate? I know I can't, that's why when I saw Queen Anne Dark Chocolate Cherries selling just recently in the stores I just had to buy a box…usually this candy is a big seller at Christmas but I don't recall seeing them so prominently displayed at other times of the year until I realized they were being suggestively promoted as Valentines Day Gifts…So, I purchased a box for Hubby and I to share…did we wait until the 14th? I'll make you guess.

Queen Anne covers their cherries in both milk and dark chocolate but I prefer the dark without a doubt…actually lately I seem to be into a dark chocolate mood about most candy and even cookies.

These are nostalgic candy for me since I always remember them being around on the holidays as I was growing up and it was one candy my father used to like...I don't have many memories of his tastes in foods but this was one he always had to have.

A little history

Queen Anne is considered America's number one cordial cherry on the market and they have been in business making fine fruit chocolate candies for over 50 years…it all started back in 1921 in Chicago when three men, Harry Martin, Max Weiss and Herman Glickman went into the candy making business…at first they made marshmallow and caramel nut confections along with other assorted chocolates…they were successful, but not as much as they would have liked…then, in 1948, they came out with Queen Anne Cordial Cherries, which skyrocketed in sales…this sweet candy creation became their most successful chocolate and to this day, is one of the top five brands of boxed chocolates sold in the United States during the Christmas holidays…more than three hundred million are sold…its no wonder these candies are now being promoted and sold for Valentines Day.

The company was sold twice before it became part of the family of chocolates owned by World's Finest Chocolate, a company that is one of only nine manufacturers who make their candy directly from the chocolate bean which they grow on their own Caribbean plantation. They also use real whole maraschino cherries not little fragments of cherries you find in other candy of this nature…

Beside the taste, one thing I really find I like is the fact that they pack the chocolates in two different, air-tight sealed trays in each box of ten, five to each tray, (at least in the size box I have on hand)…so they stay fresh and delicious…

I have a peculiar way of eating them though…I pop a whole one in my mouth and the let the dark chocolate melt as the creamy fondant filling takes over my taste buds until the cherry reveals itself...then one quick bite of that cherry with the left over filling and chocolate makes for one amazing taste sensation. But, at 150 calories and 3 grams of fat in 2 pieces it's important not to get carried away…I'm pretty good at limiting myself to just 2...they are sweet so more would be overkill.

The good news is that there are no Tran's fats or cholesterol with just 1.5 grams of saturated fat and no sodium…but, with 29 grams of carbs, not good to eat more than two as a portion size…I can do that.

I love Queen Anne Cordial Dark Chocolate Covered Cherries and am happy to say they aren't just for Christmas anymore, but make a perfect Valentines Day gift for anyone who is a fan of the Queen, even if it’s a gift for yourself…

Happy Valentines day
