I am driven crazy by the oddities of Word, especially the ugliness that happens when you start a sentence with a bullet or a number (Word decides that everything after it must also get a bullet or a number, and overriding it can get messy).
The Wordperfect suite came with my new laptop, and I have been using it with great success. However, I have not tried bullets or numbers, for fear that I would be equally disappointed with the results I get in Word.
I was not aware of Wordperfect's shortcomings in dealing with long documents. For that alone, this review was useful.
This reviewer is obviously knowledgeable, much more so than I. Useful information.

Disabling "Happy Feet" Graphics in Word (Reply to this comment)
by woody_goode
The problem you describe with Word-- boxes and graphics moving all over when you change formatting-- is a feature. Microsoft has to anchor the box to text; the program uses the current position of the cursor when you create a box. If you move the text, Microsoft assumes you want the box to move with it.
If you don't want that, it's easy to correct:
1. Right-click on the box and pick the Format Text Box tab.
2. Click on the Advanced settings in the lower right hand corner.
3. Set the radio buttons in the Horiztonal and Vertical sectiosn to "absolute position."
4. Un-check the "move object with text" option.
If you want that to be the default, click "OK" twice to save the change and then right-click the box again (to bring up the menu) and click on "Set Autoshape Defaults." Your items will never move again.
One note: If you had the "Absolute position" option (step 3) checked, Word used to always put the box in the same place. If they haven't fixed that, just shut off the "Absolute Position" setting and then re-click on "Set defaults."
