Pros:Classic color and design. Very durable.

The Bottom Line: Corning makes excellent bakeware, and this 1 1/2 quart casserole dish has gotten a lot of use in our home.
I have a set of four Corningware French White casserole dishes, and this round 1 1/2 quart (1.6 liter) size is one of the set. There is a larger round dish, as well as two sizes of oval dishes. This review will focus on the 1 1/2 quart round size.

I asked my hubby to buy these for me one year for Christmas, and he didn't disappoint me. That must have been at least 10 years ago! These have been around for a while now.
The 1 1/2 quart size measures 3" deep with a 7 1/2" wide opening. There are vertical ridges that run all around the outside edges, and there is a small lip that flares out at the top 3/4 of the dish.
The casserole dish has straight sides, and comes with a slightly domed clear glass pyrex lid, with a large glass handle in the center.
Pyrex refers to this as a stoneware that can be used in the oven, microwave, refrigerator, and can even be stored in the freezer. The old TV ads used to sing that jingle "from the freezer, to the oven, to the table".
The material is chip and crack resistant, and mine have held up for years with nary a nick. The surface is non-porous, which means it won't absorb odors.
How I Use It
When our daughter still lived at home, we were a small family of three. This casserole dish was large enough to make a small dinner, but most recipes that serve 6 people would be too much food for this smaller sized dish.
I use mine in a variety of ways, but most commonly it is used for heating up foods to take to a picnic or potluck. I often dump in a few cans of baked beans, adding in brown sugar and some of my other favorite additions, and let it cook in the casserole for several hours. They come out delicious.
This is a perfect size for cooking frozen vegetables as well. Just add the veggies, a bit of water, and cook in the oven. I have a recipe for herbed peas that tasted much better when cooked in the oven than when I make it on the stove top.
Because the casserole has straight sides, this design also works nicely for any layered dessert or dip. You'll be sure to get a portion of food from all of the layers when you dig in! My casseroles with rounded bottoms wouldn't work as well for these kinds of recipes.
We also use this as a serving bowl for other foods. At Thanksgiving I often take the stuffing out of the turkey, and place it in this dish. The food remains warm for quite a while, giving me time to pull everything together and get all the food on the table.
It's also good for storing leftovers. Ours currently sits in the fridge holding leftovers from an 8 pound ham I cooked up on Sunday. It's handy to use in this manner, because the clear lid allows me to see what contents it holds, and we are more apt to use up leftovers if we can see them.
The style is classic, and the french white color will blend nicely with any decor or style of dishes. I use all of my pieces in this set more than any other casserole dishes I own.
My one beef is with the design. I don't know how many times I have almost dropped this when removing it from my oven! Yes, I always use hot pads, but there isn't much to grip ahold of on this one. The flared top is, I'm sure, designed to help you hold the dish without letting it slip, but when I am holding the item with cloth hot pads, it sometimes is a bit precarious. I have to be extra careful and try not to carry the dish too far. I usually am lucky just to get it from the oven to the top of the stove! After it cools off it's not a problem.
Clean up is rather easy. If the food is baked on, I pour a little dishsoap in it, and fill it with hot water. Despite Cornings claims that the dish resists stains, mine does have some gold colored markings on it that I have not been able to wash off.
This smaller 1 1/2 quart size nestles nicely into the larger casserole. I place the glass lid inverted on the smaller one, put it inside the larger dish, and then put the large lid on in the upright position. It works good, but if you are pressed for space, you may find the glass knob to be in the way. It protrudes over an inch high from the top of the casserole dish.
As for what was paid for this, I have no clue. Although I have seen these at my local store being sold individually, mine was purchased as part of a set. Amazon.com currently sells this size for $15.00.
