I am very diligent about taking the proper prenatals while pregnant, and I was originally taking regular Coromega, but was thrilled when I saw that they came out with a prenatal blend in the summer of 2009.
"Coromega knows that when you’re pregnant nothing is more important than ensuring your baby is healthy. That’s why we created our high DHA Omega-3 prenatal supplement – extending the proven health benefits of Omega-3s to a prenatal formula. The best part? It tastes great and is easy on sensitive, pregnant tummies! Finally, a high DHA Omega-3 prenatal supplement that is easy for pregnant Moms to take." (Coromega.com)
Coromega Prenatal
I actually bought this on Coromega's website when it first came out, because I couldn't find it anywhere else, and it didn't even seem like there were other websites that sold it yet. A 30-pack cost me $24.99 and I also had an online discount (coupon code). I still have not seen this in stores, and I generally buy all my Coromega products at the natural foods store or Vitamin Shoppe. This comes in one flavor, which is peach.
When I received my box of Coromega Prenatal, I made an unpleasant realization. With my "regular" non-prenatal Coromega, it calls for one packet per day. I figured it was the same with this product - but it actually calls for 2 packets per day for pregnant women - so 30 packets turns out to be a 15-day supply. To be honest, I was annoyed that there were even instructions for non-pregnant women (1 packet per day instead of 2). Why would a non-pregnant person buy a prenatal? If the dose is different for breastfeeding, they should say so, but otherwise a prenatal is a prenatal! The issue is that I assumed I was getting a 30-day supply, and instead for $25, you get 15 days. That's $50 per month times 9 months, and a little steep in my opinion (when the regular supply is 90 days for about $30).
These packets are so easy to use, and I have always enjoyed the convenience of these packets since I used their "regular" formula. You just tear open a packet and squeeze it in your mouth. It doesn't need to be refridgerated, unless of course you prefer it cold. And you should avoid heating it - so no adding it to hot foods.
The coromega tastes good, and this has a definite peach flavor. It is like a creamy consistency, not watery or oily. I have tried fish oil products before that I don't like, but this does not come off as an obvious fish oil product. There is a little but of an aftertaste, so I usually follow it with something to drink or something to eat. My husband says he can smell it on my breath right after I have it (as in, slight fish smell) but otherwise I haven't found it offensive.
I haven't had any stomach issues with this product. I can't say I used it when I was in the first trimester (since I didn't know it existed, and perhaps it didn't yet!). I never had any food aversions to this product either.
Overall
This is a really easy wasy to get omega-3s in your diet, and it is nice to have a formulation specifically for pregnant women. I had a little bit of sticker shock with this product and after I used the prenatal formula I bought with the discount I had, I went back to using the "regular" Coromega (which I might add, also taste very good!). I'll give it 4 stars since it is one of the best tasting, most convenient forms of prenatal omega-3s, but the price is a little high. I wish there were instructions with the regular Coromega to perhaps double the daily dose for pregnancy, but I wanted to at least try this product.
