Pros: Pretty good for a beer that doesn't have much character, It is all natural
Cons: Takes a bit longer to get a buzz...
The Bottom Line: On a hot summer day this little bottle can refresh without knocking your socks off. Important for those of us chasing after active toddlers. Remember the LIME.

| vbfc's Full Review: Corona Extra |
...Hey bartender, I'll take another!
I wasn't going to add my two cents here, especially about a beer that isn't my 1st alcoholic beverage of choice. But, then I started to read some of the other epinions and I just had to laugh, cry, roll around on the floor, grab me a real cold one (it is in a green bottle) and type.
Read on ... by the end I promise to let you in on a secret!
FUN FACTS
Ok - here goes. Let's get the important facts out of the way.
* Corona Extra is one of a number of products manufactured by Grupo Modelo, the eighth largest brewer worldwide.
* Grupo Modelo's export portfolio currently accounts for over 80 percent of the total Mexican beer exports. That's a lotta suds folks.
* The website is: http://www.corona.com
Check all of this out for yourself. There is a link for Grupo Modelo on this site.
* Grupo Modelo also manufactures Victoria (I am partial to this ... wonder why?), Modelo Especial, Pacífico and Negra Modelo brands that are available in the U.S. in some, but not all markets. I have had Modelo Especial in Mexico (but not here because I live in the sticks), where it is super popular and it is better than Corona Extra (but I stray).
As far as the Beer Industry is concerned:
* Corona Extra is the 5th best selling brand worldwide.
* In the U.S. it is the #1 (and 2 and 3 and so) best selling import - hands down. Heineken does not even come close (even though I really like it more). For our Canadian readers, don't worry, Corona Extra is doubling market share there too.
* 77.8 million cases of Corona Extra were sold in the U.S. in 1999 Just as a side note - a case is 24 - 12 oz. bottles. Heineken was at about 58 million cases. Can you just imagine how far all these beer bottles would stretch? Why at least from the Epinions site to Cancun and back... But again I digress...
* Nobody pees in the Corona before it leaves the factory. This is just a nasty urban rumor (probably started by the Heineken folks - jealousy rears its ugly green head). Check this one out too at http://www.snopes2.com/business/secret/corona.htm#also
* Clear glass bottles are used because historically, this was the only glass available in much of Mexico. The brewers of today seem committed to keeping this tradition alive. Doesn't provide a lot of protection to the beer - but lets you keep track of that lime wedge.
* Corona Extra was packaged in cans starting in June 2000, but I have never seen it sold this way. Have you??
* Modelo is partly owned by Anheuser-Busch - what a deal - $1.6 billion invested in Grupo Modelo for 50.2% of the company.
* Finally, Grupo Modelo has eight brewing plants in the country of MEXICO (just a ways past the country of Texas, so when your brother-in-law says they are building a Corona factory down the street, make sure you take his car keys away. Wishful thinking - make him the designated doorstop.
Reasons to Love Corona Extra
* Taste is not #1 or #2 some days. BUT - you will look cool and "in the know" if you drink this beer. It is hip (even if it don't got no hops)
* Sponsor of Jimmy Buffett's tour!! Who does not aspire to be a ParrotHead - even if only for a weekend? Check out: http://www.corona.com/buffettschedule.htm

Things to Consider...Taste
***I revised this Epinion because a fellow reader/reviewer actually wanted to know about the "taste" of this beer.
Here is a little secret: Without the lime there is NO taste. CAUTION: Please Do Not EVER drink this beer unless it is very, very cold and the requisite lime has been inserted. Failure to heed this instruction may result in a big bellyache. Folks, it ain't pleasant without that lime wedge.
This is a light Mexican lager - it is light on color, flavor, hops (what gives most beer character). There is a mild bitterness, which is why the lime helps.
It is high on carbonation, which is something that I feel only belongs in soda pop. I don't think the fizz improves the taste - but some folks think that it does.
Many people accurately use the word "skunky" when describing Corona Extra and this is very true. Because it is most often found in a clear glass bottle, the beer is often over-exposed to light. This is also known as "light-struck" or your beer has a sunburn and is getting "yucky" fast. All those green and brown bottles actually serve a purpose, even if your local recycler doesn't like them.
My final thought on taste - Millions of people think that there is nothing finer in the summer than a Corona Extra with a big wedge of lime. Hey, sometimes it is fun to go with the flow.... Now how do I know if the lime is fresh??
Why the Lime??
* There are at least a dozen bartenders here in the U.S. (ok - most of them are in NY or California) willing to claim that they were the first to serve Corona Extra with a lime wedge. Why - to improve taste, to liven up the clear bottle, to ________ (insert your own silly answer here), Just because.
* Some Mexicans (the ones actually in Mexico) have been known to drink Tecate from a can with lime and salt. Some how this got lost in the translation....
* Another theory about the lime is that Mexicans drink Corona with lime not because it makes it taste better, but to kill the bacteria that is present. Something about the acidity and.... whatever. Anyway, some stupid tourist saw this and thought it would be even better to put the piece of lime in the bottle. Just shove it right in (see bartenders above).
And Finally, the real reason for that stupid wedge of lime:
* FLIES - wanna keep 'em (and other insects) out of your beer?? Put the lime wedge over the hole - voila - a little lid that you can stick between your teeth while you are drinking Makes sense to me...
Have a better theory. Develop it over a six-pack of Corona and let me know... Better yet, send me the six and I'll let you know!
