Slugs are the bane of my existence. I hate those things with a passion. They destroyed my garden last year and after placing beer traps, I was astounded by the sheer amount that emerged from seemingly nowhere to eat all my vegetables. But alas, the beer traps were too much work and not effective enough. Not to mention I had to give the slugs beer which is something that should only be done to guests you want to welcome, not kill.
This year, I took my revenge. Organic, be darned. What's the point of having an organic garden if there are no vegetables left? So I whipped out the Corry's. Did it kill the slugs and prevent them from devouring my garden?
Read on, dear reader....
The folks at Corry's mean business. How do we know this? The name of their product is not "Snail repellent" or "Shoo snail", or "Kindly please leave, slug". No, the name of this product is "Snail and slug DEATH". Oh yeah. They don't beat around the bush. They mean to kill each and every slug in the vicinity.
Despite the name, the snail bait is a rather innocuous box of granules and dust. Application is simple. Just sprinkle it around the area where slugs congregate and wait. There are several ways to do it and at least one way not to do it. Don't pour it directly on plants. This seems like a no-brainer since you'll be eating those vegetables at a later point. But there it is, right on the box: Don't pour directly on plants.
I chose the outline strategy. I chose to outline the entire bed in the product. So there's a big square of death around my veggies. As an alternative, you can pour it around individual plants. But for my situation, this would have been a waste of DEATH.
I should note that unless you want a faceful of poison (re: DEATH) don't pour this from great heights or in a stiff wind. It's a light dust that takes flight easily. I learned this very quickly.
So how well does this stuff work? It's easy to say that their product works, but it's not easy to go into detail. First, slugs come out late at night when the dew has moistened the ground. Second, they supposedly carry the Corry's away to their nests. I saw them many times when I went out to check my beer traps. But the first night I put out the Corry's, I saw no slugs. Not a single one. And I haven't seen one since, in the past 3 months the product has been used. Apparently, it works in one single night. Amazing. But again, I have no real proof since the ground was not littered with dead slugs. They simply just disappeared.
While I didn't see the slugs actually carry the granules away and die a painful death, I can only assume that they did. Not a slug in existence and my garden is flourishing with nothing noticeable having been eaten.
One thing, I will mention is that the box claims the stuff is rain proof. Seemingly this means it won't wash away. This is true of one or two light rainfalls, but I noticed the need to replenish the supply after a few deep waterings. So don't expect to pour and forget it. You'll need to make sure the stuff is still around.
After all, those evil creatures are just waiting for me to let my guard down....
