On my daughter's 2nd birthday, we decided to put her in a big girl bed. We had heard horror stories of kids falling out of beds with the slats in the headboards and having an arm or leg caught and broken so when we found this one without slats we happily bought it. We brought it home to surprise her and she was thrilled. It was simple and very quick to set up. The rails had a almost c shape to encompass the other rails that you put the bolts into so it had a sturdier grip. It took about 5 minutes to put together with just a wrench. The bed takes a standard crib mattress so you just use the one out of the crib. She promptly decided to jump on the bed (I don't recommend allowing this though) and to my surprise it held up great. We loved it. It worked great for the year she used it and is now waiting for the next child to use it.
