Pros:easy to clean, exceeds fire safety standards, price
Cons:teddy bear design shows through sheets
The Bottom Line: Inexpensive, and easy to care for- this may be the mattress for you.
You can imagine my surprise when I opened the box that our crib came in, only to find that it didn't come with a mattress. I'm serious here folks. Before my son was born, I was young and naive about these things. I had never, ever purchased a bed of any kind before, and hadn't even seen mattresses without beds in stores. What else would I think, except that when you bought a bed, the mattress was included?
Recommend this product?
So this meant more research, and yet another shopping trip (okay, so I didn't mind the shopping trip part). I began reading on what was recommended for babies to sleep on. Did you know that a child's mattress shouldn't be too soft because it's a suffocation hazard? And that you even need to think about what the mattress is stuffed with? I never knew that there were so many choices! I mean, it's just a mattress, right?
Goldilocks and the Mattresses
Because we were on a limited budget, we went to Wal-mart to pick out our child's mattress. We headed for the baby department, walked past the cute little clothes (okay- so my husband had to drag my seven month pregnant body away from all those cute teeny tiny little socks), the rows of carseats, high chairs, playpens and cribs, and set ourselves in front of the mattress display.
We saw fluffy ones, firm ones, ones stuffed with horsehair, and others stuffed with foam. We saw mattresses that cost more than our wardrobe (even at Wal-mart!) and ones that cost less than my shoes. What caught our eye was this really nice Sealy mattress. It was better than what we were sleeping on at the time. I think that it even had one of those adjustable thingy's on it. (kidding) It also cost an arm and a leg.
Finally, we ended up looking a nice simple Cosco mattress. It was cute- I had to admit that (but then, during the seventh month of pregnancy, everything baby is cute). There were little teddy bears dancing all over the heavy duty vinyl cover. It was firm, it exceeded fire safety regulations. It also wasn't stuffed with something that anybody could be allergic to. It was also only twenty five dollars. We snatched it up.
Does It Fit?
This mattress fits inside our crib pretty well. There is a small gap on one side- but it's very small, and it's the fault of our crib and not the mattress. I really do not like not being able to really try a mattress out in a crib before buying it- so I recommend purchasing the crib and mattress from the same store. At least that way, you can test drive a mattress inside a floor model (and enjoy all the lovely looks that they employees will give you as you are doing it).
Is It Comfortable?
In a way- yes, this mattress is comfortable. Would I sleep on it? Yes, but my husband wouldn't. I'm the firm mattress kind of girl, and my husband is the so-fluffy-you-sink type of guy. To me, the foam is firm enough to support, yet soft enough to be comfortable (especially after almost 15 months of use).
And How About Those Leaky Diapers?
As much as every parent hates blowouts- they happen. Even at night, they happen. And they happen often. Oh, and don't forget leaky bottles, drool, and other sorts of liquids that seem to ooze out of a baby. These would totally ruin a perfectly good cloth covered mattress. This mattress is vinyl covered- and very, very easy to clean. You take a damp (not soaking wet) cloth, and wipe down. We've had all sorts of accidents with my son's mattress, and so far the only thing that we've managed to ruin is one sheet (and that was due to a very interesting game of 'Let's throw our grape juice filled sippy cup in the crib').
One more thing about the vinyl covering- it seems to be cooler on my son's skin during those hot summer days. This can be a drawback in the winter, but I've found that flannel crib sheets help solve this problem.
What do you recommend, Fallyn?
Well, to tell the truth, I recommend that you go with your gut feeling, what you can afford, and what makes you comfortable. But as far as this mattress- I do recommend it. I have had no major problems with it. No stains, no tears, no rips. My son seems to find it very comfortable- even after sleeping in Mommy and Daddy's bed. For the price, this mattress is a good buy. I can see it lasting through not only my son now, but possibly any future children we may have.
