Okay, I am from the generation of eternal progression. Everything, seemingly just as it comes off the production line, is already being re-designed as a bigger and better model. However, growing up in this world of ever-increasing technology has not convinced me that "new and improved" is always necessary....especially in a high chair.
Almost 10 years ago, I received a Cosco Basic High Chair at my first baby shower. It has lasted wonderfully over the years and is once again being pulled out of storage for baby number three.
There is nothing fancy about this particular chair....no wheels, no toys, and no multi-phase uses. I must apologize for my simpleness, but I just don't see the need for such frivolities. My children have toys for playtime, and wheels seem far to unsafe to me. A high chair is for meal times, nothing more.
What it does have is ease of use, a folding chair style, and straps, seat, and back that are removeable for cleaning or replacement.
I have never replaced the back or seat. They clean up easily enough while on the chair, and the vinyl material is thick and durable. There has not been a problem with tears or cracking due to age or temperature.
The straps, I have removed on several occasions for washing. A screw on the back holds the belt section on. The crotch strap is attached to a metal bar under the seat. Just unhook the bar from its hole on either end, then pull the strap off.
The tray can be adjusted into 3 positions, bringing it closer or further away from the back as baby grows. To do this, you must pull out the pressure knobs underneath each side of the tray. Next, line them up with one of the sets of holes on the handles, then let them pop back in.
When baby is older, if your table is the right height, the tray can be left off. This will enable your child to eat right up to the table with the rest of the family.
The best part is how the chair folds up flat. I don't have to have it sitting out taking up space when it's not in use. Just hold the top, reach under the seat to lift the v-shaped metal bar, push the front leg, and it's done. Unfolding requires only a lift of the tray front while holding the top of the chair.
The only indication of age is the slightly yellow tone to the previously white tray and footrest. And the one potential hazard is the 3-point belt does not have a solid plastic crotch piece. It's just straps. As I have never left a child unattended, though, this does not pose a great risk.
The Cosco Basic High Chair, at a price of only $25.00, has been the most durable, long-lasting and satisfying piece of baby equipment I have owned for my three children.
